Legendary WESTERN ELECTRIC 300B DH Triode

Engineered for high performance and long life

What if the best sound was achieved decades ago? In 1938, Western Electric manufactured the first type 300B electron tube. It was a breakthrough power triode, but in those days it worked behind the scenes in the projection room. It was just another component in early Hollywood sound systems. The same great things that served moviegoers in those early days—low noise, ultra-long life, sonic purity and warmth—made it a standout tube for music lovers and vintage audio collectors as decades passed. Deep into the age of the transistor, communities around the world in search of original high-fidelity rediscovered the 300B and its exceptional performance. New amplifier designs brought the tube front and center, its customary yellow lettering on proud display.

Sometimes, the old ways are the best

Today, the 300B is manufactured at the Rossville Works. Our new factory home was custom-built to master the dozens of individual demands of tube making, from sealing the iconic glass bulb to the complex metallurgic processes within. We’ve modernized the production line here and there to establish forward momentum at a company with 150 years of history. Western Electric believes twenty-first century listeners deserve twenty-first century manufacturing standards.

SPECIFICATIONS

Classification
Moderate power, filamentary triodes for Class-A service.

Application
Audio-frequency amplifier in positions where power outputs of approximately ten watts or less are required at relatively low plate voltages.

Dimensions
Dimensions, outline diagrams of the tubes and bases, and the arrangement of electrode connections to the base terminals are shown in Figures 1 and 2.

Base and Mounting
These vacuum tubes employ medium, four-pin thrust type bases suitable for use in Western Electric 143B or similar sockets. The 300B tube has the bayonet pin so located that it may also be mounted in a Western Electric 100M, 115B, or similar socket.

The tubes may be mounted in either a vertical or horizontal position. If mounted In a horizontal position, the plane of the filament, which is indicated In Figure 2, should be vertical.

Average Direct Interelectrode Capacitances
Grid to plate 15 µµf.
Grid to filament 9 µµf.
Plate to filament 4.3 µµf.

Filament Rating
Filament voltage 5.0 volts, a.c. or d.c.
Nominal filament current 1.2 amperes

The filaments of these tubes are designed to operate on a voltage basis and should be operated at as near the rated voltage as possible. When alternating current is used for heating the filament, the grid and plate returns should be connected to a center tap on the secondary of the filament transformer.

CHARACTERISTICS

Average Characteristics
(Ef = 5.0 volts, a.c., Eb = 300 volts and Ec = -61 volts)
Plate current 60 milliamperes
Amplification factor 3.85
Plate resistance 700 ohms
Grid to plate transconductance 5500 micromhos

Limiting Operating Conditions for Safe Operation
(Not simultaneous ratings)
Maximum plate voltage: 450 volts
Maximum plate dissipation: 40 watts
Maximum plate current of an average tube for fixed grid bias: 70 milliamperes
Maximum plate current for manually adjusted grid bias or self-biasing circuit: 100 milliamperes

Recommended Operating Conditions
Recommended and maximum conditions for alternating-current filament supply are given in the table. Recommended conditions or others of no greater severity should be selected in preference to maximum conditions wherever possible. The life of the tube at maximum operating conditions will be shorter than at the recommended conditions.

Where it is necessary to operate the tube at or near the maximum plate current of 100 milliamperes, provision should be made for adjusting the grid bias of each tube independently, so that the maximum safe plate current will not be exceeded in any tube. Alternatively, a self-biasing circuit may be used, in which the grid bias for the tube is obtained from the voltage drop produced by the plate current of that tube flowing through a resistance.

Where it is necessary to use a fixed grid bias, the plate current of the average tube should be limited to a maximum value of 70 milliamperes, so that tubes having plate currents higher than the average will not exceed the maximum safe plate current.

Power Output and Distortion

Performance data including power output, second and third harmonic levels for a number of operating conditions are given in the table.

The variation of power output and harmonic levels with load resistance for several values of operating plate current is shown in Figures 7, 8 and 9, for a plate voltage of 350 volts.

The peak value of the sinusoidal input voltage, Egm, which gives the indicated power output, Pm and harmonic levels, F2m and F3m for each point in both the curves and the table, is numerically equal to the grid biasing voltage at that point. For a smaller input voltage Eg, the approximate levels may be computed from the following relations.

P=Pm(Eg/Egm)^2
F2=F2m+20 log10(Eg/Egm)
F3=F3m+40 log10(Eg/Egm)

CHARACTERISTIC CURVES

Plate-current characteristics for a typical tube are shown in Figure 3 as functions of grid bias, for alternating-current filament supply. The corresponding amplification-factor, plate-resistance, and transconductance characteristics are given in Figures 4, 5 and 6, respectively. When direct-current filament supply is used, and the grid and plate returns are connected to the negative end of the filament, the same characteristics are applicable if 3.5 is subtracted from the numerical value of each grid bias.

Cute but red fur does chew off 😜
Size: 20 x 4 x 4 in, Pattern Name: Pepper
My dog loves this hot pepper. It's our 2nd but the red fur does come off so don't leave your pet unattended with it for an extended amount of time.

This worm, pretty sure it’s a worm and not a snake, can take a lot of abuse.
Size: X-Large (Pack of 1), Color: Blue Snake, Size: X-Large (Pack of 1), Color: Blue Snake
Snake, worm, whatever, my dog doesn’t care, she loves it all the same. My little friend can be kinda rough with her toys. This is no exception. The pictures are from roughly one month of giving it to her and include playing with it at least every other day or so. The top is holding up well, but the bottom has taken some damage, and two of the squeakers have long since been destroyed. Despite this, my dog still loves playing with it. We normally play tug of war together, but on her own she chews at it to get to the squeakers inside, which she promptly destroys, which I’m totally fine with, as quiet toys are much preferred, by me, not her. I believe there are 4 in the XL size that we got. We’ve had a few of these in the past. We tend to get about 6 months out of them. After she “lovingly” removes the squeakers, she doesn’t chew on it much, and we just use it for tug of war, but at that point she’s done enough damage to the underside that its time is limited. But, as it’s pretty low priced, for the time and enjoyment we do get out of it, it’s very much worth it. I do need to clarify, the durability is actually quite good, I don’t fault the product as at all, it’s just my dog is equally as good with destruction, but it should be noted this toy does last much longer than most of her victims. The color, (we got the blue and green) is also very vivid and nice, as is the texture. We’ll be purchasing again.

Awesome toy!
Size: X-Large (Pack of 1), Color: Blue Snake
My pitbull Stella loves these! Ive bought her two of the smaller snake toys in the past and she Absolutly loves them! The first one lasted about 6 months which is a lifetime compared to how long her other toys last lol and the second one lasted about the same. This time I decided to get the XL version. It has 6 squeakers instead of 3 like the smaller versions. I picked the teal and purple colors and it's like 43 inches long I think. Its the same length as her and shes a large size dog. She loves this thing! Its so cute watching her squeak each of the squeakers with her nose. While this is a great toy it is not chew proof. In fact its quite easy for an experienced chewer to get into this toy. It is relatively strong but it wont stand a chance with a power chewer. Like I said this is the third one of these I have bought in roughly a year. They do last longer then more soft toys I will give them that. This is the only soft toy she has not destroyed in 5 mins. But after a week or so at least one squeaker will be missing. For the average dog one of these snake toys will last a really long time and they are fun to play with. We play tug of war and fetch with it. Stella also loves when I squeak the toy she will squeak it back and we'll go back and forth for hours lol. One last thing it is loud! If noisy toys bug you, don't get this. The sqeakers are industrial strength lol

Durable toy but definitely NOT invincible
Size: Medium (Pack of 1), Color: Orange Gecko
BACKGROUND I have two labradors and, with my friends dogs over, we have a combined combination of five labradors at a time. If you have seen the film "Marley & Me" then you will understand our dogs. They tear through concrete, dry wall, and, well, just about anything they can get their paws and mouths on. It is very important to have plenty of toys for them to keep pre-occupied as most of the destruction is caused by dogs that are bored. Unfortunately, many items are not able to withstand this combined destructive force. I spotted these "Invincible" line of toys and thought they were worth a try. I ended up ordering basically one of every style and size. APPEARANCE The toys come in different sizes, colors, and shapes. The most common are the Gecko and the Snake. The toys are covered with a more durable cloth that is fuzzy and suppose to withstand quite a bit of chewing. Inside the toys are what are described as durable squeakers that, if punctured, will still squeak even after hours of being bitten and chewed upon. The larger the toy ordered, the more squeakers that are sewn into the toy. RELIABILITY I have to admit these toys did last about ten times as long as any other toy I have given my dogs. Unfortunately, nothing is indestructible. My dogs managed to find kinks in the lining of the toys that, once penetrated, will cause the toys to open leaving stuffing and squeak toys all over the place. The squeakers did withstand quite a bit of chewing before the squeaking went silent. I noticed that the snake toy did last quite a bit longer than the gecko or the little dragon characters. The snake had separate compartments for the squeakers and so, if one was torn out, the others survived. On the Gecko once its middle section was torn open the squeakers were lost. CUSTOMER SUPPORT Not utilized PROS: ++ Lasted about 10X times the length of time as other "invincible" toys CONS: ++ They are not truly "invincible" and will be destroyed over time CONCLUSION The invincible line of toys did last a lot longer than most toys that I have purchased for my labradors. I would recommend the snake over the gecko or other styles. I have had to toss the geckos as they were shredded but the snakes are still with me to this day six months later. Also note, even though "Invincible" is in the title, these toys are definitely not although you will save an incredible amount purchasing these toys once and having a gradual destruction process versus having to buy new toys continuously over the same period of time that these lasted.

The toy is no match for my dogs.
Size: Large (Pack of 1), Color: Pink Snake
The toy itself is well made and the squeaker work well. Unfortunately, it only lasted about 2 weeks before my Treeing Walker Coonhound pup (super chewer) had it shredded. My Plott hound ( heavy chewer) just loved these! She is older and they last longer for her. However she does love to go for the seems first then rips out the squeaker. But she will carry it around for months like that. I think she like the material. I'll probably go back to Walmart for the smaller cheaper ones for now.
