San Augustine County had seen at least three others in the previous three years, and these murders in broad daylight were only the latest development in the decade-long rule of the criminal McClanahan-Burleson gang. Armed with handguns, Jim Crow regulations, and corrupt special Ranger commissions from infamous governors "Ma" and "Pa" Ferguson, the gang racketeered and bootlegged its way into power in San Augustine County, where it took up robbing and extorting local black sharecroppers as its main activity. After the hardware store shootings, white community leaders, formerly silenced by fear of the gang's retribution, finally sought state intervention. In 1935, fresh-faced, newly elected governor James V. Allred made good on his promise to reform state law enforcement agencies by sending a team of qualified Texas Rangers to San Augustine County to investigate reports of organized crime. In East Texas Troubles, historian Jody Edward Ginn tells of their year-and-a-half-long cleanup of the county, the inaugural effort in Governor Allred's transformation of the Texas Rangers into a professional law enforcement agency. Besides foreshadowing the wholesale reform of state law enforcement, the Allred Rangers' investigative work in San Augustine marked a rare close collaboration between white law enforcement officers and black residents. Drawing on firsthand accounts and the sworn testimony of black and white residents in the resulting trials, Ginn examines the consequences of such cooperation in a region historically entrenched in racial segregation. A very handy kitchen tool.

This can opener is an easy, hands free tool, to use. It does open canned items efficiently, but slower than hand-turn openers, which saves a painful wrist motion from which I suffer. Unlike a traditional opener, this one cuts under the can edge which requires caution when removing the lid as exposed cut edges are very sharp. Also, the opener does not stop when it has completed its circuit. The start button has to be pressed to stop action.

Update Year Later, Love it! Really impressed

Update: I've owned it a year now, still on original batteries (surprised me), it still works great. I still get a little annoyed with how slow it it, but might be time for new batteries. Once in a blue moon the circle is not completely cut, but that's on me as I control when to stop it, to reverse. No issuese removing lid, very smooth. Love it. Original review: I'm pleasantly surprised. It does a great job! Very smooth, safe cut. Who knew? That said, it is much slower than a standard electric can opener, and you have no idea where it's cutting. Now I started on the first letter on the product's label, and pay attention to when the circle is complete. Press the "on" button a second time and it goes backwards for a few seconds. Done! Use the attached magnet to pull off the lid. I'm thinking of buying a second one. Also, I very much like that it uses standard batteries, nothing weird to look for. Well done!

Opener leaves wire threads on the rim of the can when opening. Poses a danger if ingested.

Purchased this item hoping it would make opening cans easier (I have osteoarthritis in my hands). First time I tried it, after it rounded the lid of a can of DelMonte green beans, nothing. I reseated it, and held it down when it started. It opened the can after circling the top two times. When I took the lid off the can, there were tiny wire "threads" stuck on the can, and more stuck on the Kitchen Mama opener. I was able to very carefully wipe the wire threads off and pour the can of beans into my pan. HOWEVER, I will not use this product again. Who wants to run the risk of ingesting wire threads?!!! I would return the product for a refund, but my husband destroyed the box opening it, so this will go into the garbage. I wouldn't sell at a garage sale or donate it, because someone else might ingest the wire threads, and then Kitchen Mama would have a lawsuit on their hands I wouldn't have given ANY stars, but you have to give at least one to write a review.

I wanted to add that Kitchen Mama’s customer service was genuinely great. They followed up, honored the warranty, and sent me a replacement even though I couldn’t provide photos at the time. The replacement works perfectly and the experience was way less stressful than I expected.

I just needed a simple electric can opener because I have crippling pain in my hands and I can't use a manual one. I didn't expect anything fancy but for the one job this thing had it still really let me down.
This thing is so slow it reminds me of my AOL days. And when it's done, it just... keeps going. When you turn it off it takes FOREVER to wind down. The first few times I tried yanking it off because I thought it was stuck.
And then it fully died in under a year.
But honestly maybe what bothers me the most of all is when I contacted customer support about the warranty replacement, I got an email back asking for photographic proof that my BATTERIES WERE IN CORRECTLY. Really?
(A photo that I could not provide because it had broken days earlier and I threw it in the trash, who hoards broken appliances?).
I really expected better from a ‘reputable’ brand.
