Have our noise-soaked lives driven us mad? And is absolute silence an impossible goal--or the one thing that can save us? A lively tale of one man's quest to find the grail of total quiet. "I don't know at what point noise became intolerable for me," George Michelsen Foy writes as he recalls standing on a subway platform in Manhattan, hands clamped firmly over his ears, face contorted in pain. But only then does Foy realize how overwhelmed he is by the city's noise and vow to seek out absolute silence, if such an absence of sound can be discovered. Foy begins his quest by carrying a pocket-sized decibel meter to measure sound levels in the areas he frequents most--the subway, the local caf , different rooms of his apartment--as well as the places he visits that inform his search, including the Parisian catacombs, Joseph Pulitzer's "silent vault," the snowy expanses of the Berkshires, and a giant nickel mine in Canada, where he travels more than a mile underground to escape all human-made sound. Along the way, Foy experiments with noise-canceling headphones, floatation tanks, and silent meditation before he finally tackles a Minnesota laboratory's anechoic chamber that the Guinness Book of World Records calls "the quietest place on earth," and where no one has ever endured even forty-five minutes alone in its pitch-black interior before finding the silence intolerable. Drawing on history, science, journalistic reportage, philosophy, religion, and personal memory, as well as conversations with experts in various fields whom he meets during his odyssey, Foy finds answers to his questions: How does one define silence? Did human beings ever experience silence in their early history? What is the relationship between noise and space? What are the implications of silence and our need for it--physically, mentally, emotionally, politically? Does absolute silence actually exist? If so, do we really want to hear it? And if we do hear it, what does it mean to us? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 30 million Americans suffer from environment-related deafness in today's digital age of pervasive sound and sensory overload. Roughly the same number suffer from tinnitus, a condition, also environmentally related, that makes silence impossible in even the quietest places. In this respect, Foy's quest for silence represents more than a simple psychological inquiry; both his queries and his findings help to answer the question "How can we live saner, healthier lives today?" Innovative, perceptive, and delightfully written, Zero Decibels will surely change how we perceive and appreciate the soundscape of our lives.Binding Type: Paperback

My everyday espresso bean — fresh-ground changes everything
Flavor Name: Espresso, Size: 35.2 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I've gone through more bags of this than I can count — it's become my default espresso bean and I don't see that changing.
I grind it fresh for espresso and the difference vs. pre-ground is immediately noticeable — more crema, better aroma, cleaner taste. If you're still buying pre-ground, this is a good reason to stop.
Flavor-wise it's smooth and approachable — medium roast means no harsh bitterness, no aggressive dark-roast smokiness. Just clean, well-balanced espresso. The 100% Arabica shows; it doesn't have that robusta edginess you get in cheaper blends.
The 2.2lb bag is good value compared to buying smaller bags or anything from a specialty roaster. For everyday home espresso, the price-to-quality ratio is hard to beat.
Only mild gripe: the bag isn't the most resealable after the first open — I transfer mine to an airtight container. Minor inconvenience for a bean this good.

New Favorite Coffee
Flavor Name: Espresso, Size: 35.2 Ounce (Pack of 1), Flavor Name: Espresso, Size: 35.2 Ounce (Pack of 1)
Let me start out by saying I am a coffee fiend. I drink it all hours of the night and day and I've tried just about every brand you can think of. I took a chance ordering this and I'm so glad I did! Reading the other reviews helped me so I hope this helps someone else, too.
No one is paying me for my opinion, I'm not getting a single thing for writing this except the satisfaction of reporting on a quality product.
Not only is it a good price for how much you get, (09/25- $22 for 35.2 oz) but this is some of the smoothest coffee I've ever tasted. The beans are so shiny and just pretty. They're not all dried out and dull and dessicated looking like some coffees... The beans smell so good in the bag and even better once I've ground them. They grind up very quickly and easily too. There's no bitter aftertaste. Just pure, delightful, delicious coffee.
I got the 5/10 espresso, and it's perfect for me. it's just strong enough. I like medium-strong roasts, so if you prefer darker or lighter roasts they have plenty of other options.
I use both a drip coffee pot and a French press and this works beautifully in both. The crema in the French press is gorgeous.
It's so far above other brands- even Seattle's best and eight o clock and Cameron's, which I thought I really liked... They don't hold a candle to this.
I can't wait to try the other flavors.

Good Beans for Home Espresso
Flavor Name: Espresso, Size: 35.2 Ounce (Pack of 1)
I’ve been using these beans daily for about two weeks in my espresso machine, and they’ve been really consistent. The flavor is smooth and easy to drink, with a mild nutty note and low acidity. It’s not overly bitter, which I personally like for everyday coffee.
One thing I noticed — you do need to dial in the grind a bit to get the best crema, but once you do, it comes out pretty nice.
On the downside, the aroma and intensity are a little on the lighter side. If you’re into strong, bold espresso, this might not hit that mark.
Overall, this is a great everyday option — especially if you want something smooth and reliable without too much bitterness. Good value for the size too.

Great Gum to Help with Health Journey
Flavor Name: Spearmint, Size: 55 Count (Pack of 1)
This PUR Spearmint gum gets five stars from me. The spearmint flavor is really good and refreshing, but the only downside is the flavor doesn’t last super long compared to regular gum. Still, I bought this more for the cleaner ingredients than anything else since it fits into my current health journey and I wanted something aspartame-free.
The gum has a little outer shell coating on it, but it’s still soft and easy to chew. It’s not hard or weirdly crunchy or anything like that. The family-size bag is also nice because it’s easy to throw in your car, backpack, or wherever without taking up a ton of space. Plus the resealable zipper bag helps keep it fresh.
If you’re trying to avoid a bunch of chemicals and want a cleaner chewing gum option, this is definitely worth trying. I’d buy it again.

Good product
Flavor Name: Spearmint, Size: 55 Count (Pack of 1)
Very soft and chewy, sugar free and has good flavor. It does lose its flavor around 10 minutes in but that's how long its meant to be chewed for anyway.
