A musical career is a living, breathing thing – a sonic moodboard of passions and influences that goes wherever the muse takes it. For Kris Barras Band, formed in 2015 and led by MMA fighter-turned-musician Kris Barras, that muse has guided them from blues beginnings to a hard rock renaissance. It continues to be one hell of a ride, having reached number 5 in the Official UK Album Chart and number 1 in the Rock & Metal Album Chart with 2024’s ‘Halo Effect’.

That fascinating evolution continues on their forthcoming sixth album, ‘Monsters We Made’, with a sound that continues to suit the scale of the legendary venues they’ve played, including Wembley Arena and the Royal Albert Hall, while drawing comparisons with the likes Black Stone Cherry and Shinedown – which suits Kris just fine. “We wanted big singalongs, big riffs, big solos,” the band’s leader says of their creative ethos this time around. “The kind of hard rock music that belongs in arenas – dense, complex and able to energise the biggest crowds.” 

Such ambitions are easier said than done, but with the band’s guitarist/keyboardist Josiah Manning on production duties, it’s a task the Devon band – completed by bassist Frazer Kerslake and drummer Billy Hammett – have been equal to. For evidence, you need only listen to the colossal opening title track, which tackles the idea of being your own worst enemy and features what Kris rightly considers “one of the best choruses I’ve ever written”; or the epic ballad, “Otherside”, which plucks at heartstrings and orchestral strings alike.

“I’d like to think this record could unite our older and newer fans,” says Kris of ‘Monsters We Made’, a record that will appeal to blues fans thanks to its contrasts between light and dark, as well as rock fans wanting to bang their heads.

It worked well for the pool on our cruise ship and for the ocean. I didn’t have to reapply as often as I thought I would have for a mineral sunscreen. What an epic beginning to a new world for Piper Rayne! The Nest and the Hockey men that inhabit the building are going to be something else in an entirely awesome way. Rowan Landry is a hockey player dubbed “Mr. Heartbreak,” and that gives you a clue of what he is known for stumbles upon a woman that he can’t resist. Will he change his ways? Or will they part ways and continue his heartbreak streak? I really enjoyed Rowan as a character because he is this alpha male hockey sensation and as you read you find out that there is so much more to him that just being a god at hockey. He is kind, heartwarming and knows how to use what he has to get what he wants. He is loyal and honest. A great leading man for this new series. Then you meet Kyleigh and you can’t help but be in love with her charm. She is witty, funny, beautiful and above all can hold her own and dish out quips! Kyleigh and Rowan needed to find themselves and their journey was beautiful to read. The rest of the Nest inhabitants form a charismatic second line of characters. It made me wish that I had their stories in my kindle already. I am looking forward to more. Bodhi will make your heart melt, you just wait! I loved this new world. I loved the sexiness in finding yourself and stumbling upon a once in a lifetime love maybe.

Let’s talk about the spice level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Let me just say—this might be the spiciest Piper Rayne book I’ve listened to yet. Rowan and Kyleigh were straight-up feral for each other. The scenes were hot without feeling repetitive, and you could feel how much they were starting to care for each other underneath all that heat. What I love about Rayne is that her books always deliver a solid story with a strong emotional pull and enough steam to keep things interesting. This one had both. Now for my only issue: The third act breakup. Look, I get it. Drama makes the world go round. But Kyleigh not telling Rowan her real name when they were just supposed to be friends-with-benefits? That’s not betrayal. That’s standard hot girl protocol. Rowan, you didn’t even know her last name—calm down.😒 Let’s take a moment to talk about Conor. He was an absolute douche-canoe. I’m an older sibling, so I get the whole protective thing—but this man was on a power trip. Your sister is a grown @ss woman, not a teenager sneaking out of the house. You’re her brother, not her father. Sit down and take several deep breaths. 🙄 We got the Avengers of audiobook narrators: Sean Masters, Erin Mallon, Connor Crais, JF Harding, Troy Duran, Teddy Hamilton, CJ Bloom. That’s not a cast—that’s a supergroup! Every voice fit the characters so well, which brought everything to life. Zero complaints! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Overall, Mr. Heartbreaker gave me everything I wanted: spice, swoon, hockey boys being dumb, and a heroine who didn’t owe anyone an explanation—but gave them one anyway. Rowan for me was everything, Kyleigh not so much. I wish I liked her but she acted way too immature for me, she turned it around a bit at the end. I was invested enough with the story and wanting Rowan to get happy ending to finish the book. I can't wait for Henrys book.
