We get the Greater Than God EP in it's entirety, and 25 years later the title sounds more modest than anything else-there's a gift for melody here, a gift for speed and dynamics, that leaves nearly all their contemporaries in the dust. Then there's the two singles, Ephemeral and Loveblind, complete with b-sides. All of it originally released on Sarah Records, the place where testosterone and rock clichés went to die. And if those clichés still exist today, the fault lies in the world for refusing to change. Let us be direct: these songs are so beautiful; they evoke so much. It's always the people in between, the ones who straddle genres, that make the most exciting music. So even as Secret Shine-in their guitars, in their harmonies-echoed the sound we call shoegaze, the drift we call dreampop. They brought a level of pop smarts to their music, an emotional depth, that in the right moment (or the wrong moment-especially the wrong moment) can move the listener to tears. You could call them the last great shoegaze band of the shoegaze era. One hears in these songs a final glorious breath right before Britpop arrives and money becomes more important than art, before digital life becomes ubiquitous, and our lives accelerate into fragments and chaos and oblivion, all of us feeling anonymous and yet always under constant surveillance. Genius is a lot of things, but mostly it's just of good timing. And now that Time has, in a linear sense, ceased to exist at all, maybe Secret Shine can be allowed to exist without being defined by their musical influences. Let Secret Shine be simply Secret Shine-one of the most emotionally powerful bands of their era, or any era you want to put them in.

The Possibilities

Despite its potential, this book ultimately failed to resonate with me. I found myself repeatedly compelled to put it down, as the focus on the empowerment aspect was overshadowed by the narrative’s preoccupation with re-triggering ourselves through the perpetuation of a harmful lie. This lie, which has tragically cost many Black men their lives and livelihoods, diverted our attention from the more profound themes of rebuilding culture, redefining ourselves, and creating a new world. Instead of exploring the possibility of a beautiful utopia, we were subjected to a process of de-centering ourselves and centering them, their likeness, and the relentless pursuit of proving our worth. While there were indeed wise words that moved me, I was left questioning the purpose of dedicating so much time to those who did not share our sentiments. Who are these individuals who required our convincing, and who are we who felt compelled to do so? I found Sydney, her family, and the inhabitants of Orange Beach to be unlikable characters. I fear that the plot was compromised when the focus shifted to inclusion.

Wow! Loved it!

Wow, I don't even know what to say about this book, but well done. I was a little bit mystified in the beginning. Our FMC and MMC definitely had me feeling a specific sort of way. A father, who was released from prison after "The Event" where all the white people in the Nation killed themselves, struggles with his identity. His daughter, Sidney, a biracial young adult who was raised by her white family, struggles with the fact that things she was taught were not necessarily true, and finds it hard to connect to her blackness. This is a tumultuous story of a beautifully written adaptation to an entirely new way of life. I didn't necessarily agree with certain ideations of the author, who in his book, claimed that there was a lost feeling after "The Event," but that's just personal experience, and I think that many black people would adapt. This book brings up so many feelings. How would I feel if "The Event" happened? Now that the "system" is dismantled? This book brings up dialogue and conversation. Amazingly well done. I'm still pondering. I know that this will be something I think about often. Wow.
Very seldom do I tear up at books, but the representation of black joy in this story genuinely made my heart feel full. The love that when black people come together with nothing but amazing energy, was described so adequately in this book. I could feel it myself. And to that, I have to applaud Cebo Campbell.

Don't Settle For Less
Format: Paperback
This book gave me the revelation and encouragement to get back what the enemy had stolen. Persistence is a key. This book increased my faith to receive God's promises for our lives. I learned to not be weary in well doing. My wife and I received much breakthrough. I sometimes revisit this book for a fresh reminder. This book is full of revelation and encouragement. It isn't just information but teaches you to put into practice a path to being an overcomer.
