The Juniperus communis 'Alpine Carpet' is a dwarf, ground-hugging evergreen shrub prized for its soft, dense, blue-green foliage and exceptional cold hardiness, making it an ideal, low-maintenance groundcover for the Canadian Prairies. Foliage: Features dense, finely textured, bluish-green needles with silver stripes that retain their colour throughout the winter, providing year-round interest. Size & Form: A slow-growing, ground-hugging shrub that typically reaches only 8–12 inches (0.2–0.3 meters) tall with a spread of up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) at maturity. Hardiness: Extremely cold-hardy and reliably grows in Canadian Hardiness Zone 2a to 6b. Tolerances: It is highly adaptable and drought-tolerant once established, performing well in poor, rocky soils and urban environments. It is also deer and rabbit resistant. Light: Requires full sun to thrive and maintain dense growth. Water: Water deeply during the first growing season to establish roots. Once established, it is very drought-tolerant and sensitive to standing water. Soil: Adaptable to a wide range of well-drained soils, including rocky or sandy soil. It will not tolerate wet soil. Maintenance: This is a low-maintenance shrub that requires minimal pruning. Any shaping should be done in late winter or early spring before new growth starts.
