Pictou Island - a remote speck of land in Canada's Northumberland Strait, mid-way between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island - has been a Scottish enclave since the arrival of the first Scots about 1819. The Islanders rapidly created a vibrant, self-sufficient community based on farming, lobster fishing and canning; this book tells their story. Illustrated with over 150 photographs and maps, it examines the Island's history and economy, and the origins of and relationships between the early families on Pictou Island. It notes the known genealogy of all persons who were on Pictou Island at or before 1911. It also reflects the out-migration of Pictou Islanders to the mainland and throughout North America, discussing all known descendents of Island residents who were born before 1930. These materials will assist those with Pictou Island ancestry in identifying their roots. All net proceeds will be donated to the Pictou Island Community Association or the Pictou Island Heritage Association.
