Man Power presents his self-titled debut album, the first album on Correspondent. Since first appearing as an anonymous online presence in 2013, Man Power has released original music and remixes on a wide range of labels including Hivern Discs, Throne of Blood, Voyeurhythm, Ene Tokyo, and, of course,Correspondant, the home of the majority of his original musical output. While his work to date has displayed a notable range of tempos and textures, his eponymous debut album sees him take a step further away from the dancefloor and offers a deeper exploration of his left-field influences, with an almost-pop sensibility that manages to swing back and forth between doleful and playful over the course of the album's compact 50 minutes. Citing touchstones as diverse as Laurie Anderson, Steve Reich, and Tangerine Dream, as well as dealing in shades of jazz, techno, and balearica, the album manages to speak in a number of voices, but still ultimately communicates as one singular whole. This is not merely a collection of club tracks, hastily compiled and capable of living in abstraction, but instead a true album wherein each element services the finished document, and in which each track provides further context for that which precedes it. An essential book on U.S. race and capitalism!
Format: Paperback
One of the most important books on race and capitalism ever written. Such a nuanced study of the California penal system that includes the racist structure of the United States’ criminal justice system, but goes far beyond to analyze how capitalism and profit drive politicians, police, investors, landowners, and working class people—white and Black—to expand the prison system in an age of dropping crime rates. I teach it regularly to undergraduates and graduate students, and it drives fascinating discussions.

Gilmore does a great job of discussing and parceling out the very complex ...

If anyone has mastered the political economy and geography of prisons in California, it is Ruth Wilson Gilmore in Golden Gulag. Gilmore does a great job of discussing and parceling out the very complex and complicated relationships that exist between capitalism as a system that produces our material world alongside economic crises, and the function of prisons to absorb, manage, relocate and "hide" those very crises in the era of neoliberalism. She also skillfully reminds us over and over that it is black and brown working-class poor communities that bear the brunt of this kind of system that also expresses it's power via white supremacy. I am finding this book very useful and chock-full of interesting information for my current research.
People may find the book a difficult read because it loaded with information and technicalities they are unfamiliar with, but these are good reasons to struggle with a text and truly grasp the increasingly intricate processes that determine and guide the world we live in (and the places we may end up locked in!). As Marx said, there is no royal road to science and knowledge.
