Exhibitions and publications put André Arbus, Paul Dupré-Lafon, Jules Leleu, Jean Pascaud, Marc du Plantier, Jacques Quinet, Jean Royère and Louis Süe back in the spotlight. The time has therefore come to draw up a panorama of the decorative arts of an era that included a host of decorators, furniture and lighting designers, ironworkers and ceramists. Difficult to define precisely, like many other styles, the 40 asserted itself with the International Exhibition in Paris in 1937 and the Salon des artistes décorateurs in 1939, to end in the 50s. Even if, from the mid-30s, there was an evolution towards more lyricism, a return to eccentric forms, ornamentation, fine craftsmanship, and the styles of the past. The extremely diverse aesthetic currents, art deco, modernism, neoclassicism and baroque, analyzed by Bruno Foucart, and the contrasting careers of decorators retraced by Jean-Louis Gaillemin make it possible to define the ambitions of a style that fascinates many contemporary creators.
