Big Red Robe (Da Hong Pao)

Big Red Robe (Da Hong Pao/ 大红袍) is a roasted oolong tea from the Wuyi Mountains in Fujian, China. It's one of the most well-known Chinese oolongs — the name translates to "Big Red Robe" and comes from a legend about a scholar who draped his red robe over the original tea bushes to protect them. Our Big Red Robe has a charcoal-roasted character with fruity and nutty notes underneath.

If you've had lighter Taiwanese oolongs like Dong Ding and want to try something on the darker, more roasted end of the spectrum, Big Red Robe is a natural next step. The flavour is warm and full — think roasted nuts, a touch of stone fruit, and a long, smooth finish with that Wuyi mineral quality.

How to brew

Gongfu style (recommended): Use 6g of tea in a 150ml gaiwan or Yixing teapot. Boiling water. Steep for 10 seconds for the first 3 infusions, then add 20 seconds from the fourth. Good for 5–6 rounds — the roasted notes soften into something fruitier with each steep. If you have a round-bellied or taller Yixing pot, even better — the extra space helps concentrate the aroma, which is a big part of what makes this tea worth sitting with.

Western style: Use 2g per 240ml teapot with 95°C water. Steep for 3 minutes. Good for 2 infusions.

Tip: Pour into a taller cup if you have one. The shape holds the aroma closer so you can catch the roasted, fruity layers before each sip.

Tea profile

  • Taste: Charcoal, fruity, nutty
  • Type: Oolong tea (roasted, Wuyi rock style)
  • Origin: Wuyi Mountain, Fujian, China
  • Oxidation: 40-60% — medium to heavily oxidized, charcoal roasted
  • TCM Property: Neutral to warm (平性偏温) — roasting adds warmth
  • Harvest: Spring 2024
  • Caffeine: Medium — suits morning drinking
  • Ingredients: 100% loose tea leaves, no artificial flavours or colours

What makes Big Red Robe different?

Big Red Robe belongs to the Wuyi yan cha (rock tea) family. What sets these teas apart is the charcoal roasting process, which gives them a warmer, more toasty character than lightly oxidised oolongs. The rocky Wuyi terrain also adds a mineral undertone, and it's what makes these teas taste unlike anything else. One of our reviewers described it as the "unique rock rhyme taste," and that sums it up well.

About Wuyi rock oolongs

Wuyi rock oolongs (yan cha) grow in the crevices and valleys of Fujian's Wuyi Mountain area. The mineral-rich soil and misty climate give these teas their characteristic lingering sweetness. They're typically more heavily roasted than Taiwanese oolongs like Dong Ding, which gives them a darker, more full-bodied character.

Storage

Keep in an airtight container in a cool, dark spot away from light and moisture. Roasted oolongs are quite stable and store well over time.

Pairs well with our Pumpkin Yixing Clay Teapot — the round belly shape helps bring out the aroma. Browse our full oolong tea collection.

Joanne's note

I get asked about Big Red Robe more than almost any other tea — the name carries a lot of history, and there's a wide range of quality and price out there. Ours is a solid, well-balanced version that gives you the roasted Wuyi character without the steep price tag of competition-grade leaves. One of our regulars, Helen, has ordered from us three times now — she told us good Big Red Robe is hard to find outside China and she's been happy with what we've got. That kind of feedback means a lot to us.

I've also noticed this tea has a way of slowing people down. A couple visited our Tea Bar expecting a quick 15-minute tasting and ended up staying for two hours with a pot of Big Red Robe, just chatting and re-steeping. That's what I like about it — it rewards you for taking your time. If you normally drink English Breakfast or other strong black teas, this is a good oolong to try first. The roasted warmth feels familiar, but there's more going on underneath. Available at our Salamanca Tea Bar — come try before you buy.

Great dog balls at a great price
Size: Medium
The balls are a favorite for my dog. I could have done without the hole through the middle because I don't do treats in balls anyway. My dog loves balls for their own merit. I needed replacement balls for my Nerf Dog Ball launcher. It seems the originals have disappeared from the market. I took a chance because the price is right and this Chuck-it ball works very well so we're liking this ball a lot. So far my Dachsund, who can destroy a tennis ball (the kind they are selling as Nerf Dog replacements) in 3 minutes has not done any damage to this one so that's a win. I recommend this as a much better ball than the fuzzy tennis balls. I like the colors too since many dog toys are green (which gets lost in the lawn, etc.) or red (even though dogs have red/green color blindness. Blue and orange are good and pretty easy to find. I liked these well enough that this set was my second purchase so I will have spares in case the others are lost.

My Baby loves his new baby!
Size: Medium, Size: Medium
Finally! A ball my 107 lb. pitty/pointer mix can’t destroy. He has torn up every single “indestructible” toy in a day or so until now. He peels fabric and fur off non-rubber toys. He is a 4-legged shredder. I’ve added pictures of him for a size reference of my dog versus this product. I know I had wanted that when shopping for this item. This ball is now his beloved “baby.” He goes absolutely insane looking for it, chewing it, chasing it, and even sleeping with it. He won’t rest unless he knows exactly where it is. It is his only toy, and he is good with that. After getting this home, I tried giving him other choices, but he won’t touch them. I was worried that he would rip it apart by putting his teeth in the holes, but so far, not a scratch. It is soft enough to collapse just enough to keep it from cracking when his jaws crush it but not so soft that he can rip it to sheds. The holes are large enough to prevent a suction or vacuum effect on his tongue or mouth. For his size jaws, it is a perfect fit. Other dogs might have problems with suction or be able to get their teeth in those holes and rip it apart. Who knows? The older version of the Chuckit squeaky ball was his favorite for the year and a half he had it, but the way they make them now, he peels off the orange triangle in hours flat, the squeaker falls out (choking hazard), and then he rips it apart. I’m going to stock up on these. I can’t imagine how crazy he will be if they ever stop production or change the materials.

Great little toy for playful small dogs
These toys are a soft latex kind of material. I would not recommend these for larger dogs who can wreck a tennis ball, or who are rough with toys. The material of these toys lasts quite a while, but does break down in direct sunlight in addition to dog saliva and being left outdoors in inclement weather. My dogs have played with these toys for a week's time with no adverse reactions from the materials. For a better explanation of the toy, see my video. I show a "durable" toy that is at least 12 years old. I show a similar toy to these here, but shaped like a chicken. It is showing the effects of time, and dog love; it was a favorite of my previous pet, and bequeathed to the dogs I now have. This chicken toy will "disappear" soon because its material is breaking down. I highly recommend these toys for dogs who like small toys, soft toys, and toys that squeak. I do not recommend these for dogs who are "chewers" of toys, large dogs who may swallow this toy(it fits in an average woman's palm), for owners who hate squeeking toys, or for a pack of dogs who will bite and pull at this toy. Although it does have stretch, it can be sliced with sharp teeth, and come apart.

FOUND IT!!!
My dog had found one of these on the road and absolutely love this toy it had hole in it from other dog's teeth hardly bounced but he loved it. I looked in every store I went to trying to find this toy could never find it finally was looking for dog toys found this package, was hoping it was the same thing. Oh it was! When I say my dog loves his toy that is an understatement he has played and will play with this for hours no problem leaving him at home alone he is entertained. If he's not throwing this around and chasing it he's laying down and sleeping because he's wore out. It's squeaky it's bouncy and hopefully durable it is soft fits in his mouth and he just has literally a ball with it. He is laying here panting so much right now from playing with this ball this morning to your dog a favor and yourself get these balls get this toy. On the other side of that you might have to take it away from them when you go to bed at night because ours wants to play with it at the weirdest times and it is squeaky thanks so much hope this helps
