This fully revised and updated version of Peter Janssen’s hugely popular book has added new attractions all around the country and deleted attractions that have closed. All the information has been updated.

Unbeknownst to many New Zealanders, New Zealand is a land of quirky collectors, colourful characters and unusual ‘backyard’ projects. It is commonly known to have some of the most beautiful ‘off-the-beaten track’ scenery in the world. Worth A Detour South Island lets you in on all those unusual things to do and places to see that don’t appear in regular travel guides. While some places are well known locally, they are more often than not bypassed in favour of the bigger draw cards.

“I have travelled just about every road and visited every town in the South Island. But, I’m drawn to the offbeat attractions. The quirky places bypassed by travellers and the eccentric characters that have great stories to tell. This book is a varied collection of places in the South Island that I think are worth a detour,” says Peter.

How about a visit to the Hokonui Moonshine Museum, Monkey Island or Sock World? Or our very own ‘Niagara Falls’ which plummets to a deathdefying fall of about half a metre. You can visit New Zealand’s only solar salt works. How about the Harwood Hole with the deepest and longest cave system in the country or Quartzopolis Town of Light.

For historical and cultural spots there is Cook’s Globe, Mitchell’s Gully Gold Mine, Kaiapoi Pā , Dame Ngaio Marsh’s House, Temuka Pottery or St Paul’s Lutheran Church. Visit whimsical cafes, sip wine in beautiful vineyards, taste a gourmet pie or stroll empty pristine beaches surrounded by rainforests.

Worth A Detour South Island is divided into geographic areas of the South Island. Each entry includes descriptions, history, directions, addresses, and contact phone numbers of these hidden gems. Accompanied with colour sections of photographs which bring the text to life.

Definitely works!
I noticed I was having weird rough patches on my back and thighs but didn't know what they were. So with my next appt to the dermatologist, I found out it was eczema. Ugh. So I started looking at creams and such and stumbled on this bar soap. It works really well. When I shower, I work it into the problem areas and let it sit there with the shower head turned away so it doesn't wash off, and then wash my face, etc. When I'm finished with everything, I wash everything off, after the soap has been on my skin for several minutes. I've noticed a substantial decrease in the bumpy areas on my back and legs. I loooove this soap, and yes, definitely recommend it for people dealing with eczema. But definitely use an exzema skin cream too if you are itching. I wasnt, but started to as well because it also helps to keep the outbreak under control as well.

Soap for dry skin on the face and body
This soap does soften the skin of the affected area but the itching still continues. I am not sure if there is an anti itch ingredient in the soap but there should be.

Great sunscreen!
Style: 4 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Eucerin Sunscreen works well and applies cleanly, not greasy. I spend a lot off time outdoors and I am satisfied with the sun protection this product provides.

Don’t rub, break it down between your fingers and dab!!
Style: 4 Fl Oz (Pack of 1)
Great sunscreen. The first time I applied it, i made the mistake of rubbing it in so it gave me a white cast. I learned my mistake the second time, spreading it in between my fingers and than dabbing it on my face, it gives a cast at first but after a few minutes it went away. And it feels so good. like I’m not wearing anything. I tried the tinted sunscreen it feels good but it made me look orange. I used to wear the Eucerin Daily Lotion spf 30 but they discontinued so I had to look for a replacement and after trying other sunscreens they were all terrible; greasy, allergic reactions and too creamy! This one’s perfect, it’s definitely my new go to!!
