We discovered this beautiful Ercol dining set tucked away in a Sussex barn, stored carefully by a retired joiner who had once worked for a well-known cabinetmaker in Brighton. The set had been in the family since new, originally purchased in the early 1960s from a local department store that stocked Ercol furniture during its golden era.

What caught our attention first was the table’s rich plank top, its grain glowing beneath a light veil of dust. One by one, we uncovered the matching six Ercol 1960s hoop-back chairs — each in excellent structural condition, with their elegant spindles and contoured elm seats intact. It was immediately clear this was no piecemeal collection — it was a full, cherished suite, used for Sunday roasts, birthday teas, and late-night card games.

Back in our studio, we gave the set a gentle clean and nourishing treatment to bring out the warmth of the elm and beech woods, careful to retain the patina and history that gives it soul. It’s a piece of post-war British design — honest, functional, and beautifully made — ready to return to a home that values timeless craftsmanship and understated mid-century charm.
