Their history began in America in the early 18th century, when Alexander McHargue followed other Ulster Scots to Pennsylvania, settling in an area of Lancaster County that later became Dauphin County. Years of research into the McHargue family resulted in the discovery that the McHargues have a truly interesting and quintessentially American history that should be shared with all family members. Their history began in America in the early 18th century, when Alexander McHargue followed other Ulster Scots to Pennsylvania, settling in an area of Lancaster County that later became Dauphin County. In Paxton Township, he eventually obtained a land grant, which would have been impossible in the counties of the north of Ireland from which he emigrated. Later his three oldest sons followed the Scots-Irish down the Valley of Virginia to North Carolina, in a further search for land and a future with promise. The descendants of his two youngest children settled in Pennsylvania.

Eventually, members of the family spread out on trails that followed the course of American history, following early routes to Georgia, Kentucky, Indiana, Missouri and the Oregon Trail to the Pacific northwest.
