Both our splitting axes and the Outdoor Axe feature a metal guard to protect the handle. Extra handles for these axes include a guard fastened to the handle. Hafting an axe with a new handle with a metal guard requires a little more effort than a normal wooden handle. More force is needed to press the axe head onto the handle, and it is important to make sure that the guard goes into the axe eye (hole in the axe head) a little ways.
