A British infantry squad — referred to as a section — normally consisted of ten men divided into a rifle group and a Bren group. Each section was led by a corporal armed with a rifle or pistol, with a lance corporal commanding the Bren group. All section members carried ammunition for the Bren (700 rounds in 25 magazines), and all men carried grenades. As the war progressed, section leaders and second-in-commands were issued Thompson or Sten submachine guns, and late in the war a second Bren was added to many veteran sections.

Canadian infantry sections were organised identically to their British counterparts. From 1943–45, the Canadian practice of mounting MMGs and HMGs on Universal Carriers freed up additional Bren guns for some infantry sections. All three Canadian infantry divisions were trained for amphibious operations, participating in landings at Dieppe, Sicily, Italy, Normandy, the Breskens Pocket, and the Rhine crossing. The 3rd Canadian Infantry Division conducted so many amphibious assaults they earned the nickname 'The Water Rats' from Field Marshal Montgomery.
