Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens

Overview:

The Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens is a compact and versatile prime lens designed for Canon RF-mount mirrorless cameras. Renowned for its affordability and impressive optical performance, this lens is ideal for a variety of photography styles, including portrait, street, and everyday photography. Its fast f/1.8 aperture and quiet autofocus make it a great choice for both stills and video work.

Detailed Key Features:

  • Fast f/1.8 Aperture: The lens features a maximum aperture of f/1.8, allowing for excellent performance in low-light conditions and offering significant control over depth of field. This wide aperture helps to achieve a pleasing background blur (bokeh) and effectively isolates subjects from their backgrounds, making it ideal for portraiture and creative shots.

  • Compact and Lightweight Design: The RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is designed to be compact and lightweight, making it highly portable and easy to carry. Its small size ensures that it fits comfortably in a camera bag and does not add unnecessary bulk to your camera setup, which is particularly useful for travel and everyday shooting.

  • Stepping Motor (STM) Autofocus: The lens is equipped with Canon's Stepping Motor (STM) technology, which provides smooth, quiet, and accurate autofocus. This is especially beneficial for video recording, where silent focusing helps maintain clean audio tracks, as well as for still photography where quick and reliable autofocus is crucial.

  • High Optical Quality: Despite its compact size, the lens delivers sharp and clear images with good contrast. Its optical design helps minimize distortions and chromatic aberrations, ensuring high-quality results across various shooting scenarios.

  • Versatile Focal Length: With a 50mm focal length, this lens offers a natural perspective that closely resembles the human eye. This makes it a versatile choice for a range of photography styles, from portraits and street photography to general-purpose shooting.

  • Affordable Price Point: The RF 50mm f/1.8 STM offers excellent value for money, providing high performance at a more accessible price compared to higher-end lenses. This makes it a great option for both beginner photographers and those looking to expand their lens collection without a significant investment.

  • Circular Aperture: The lens features a 7-blade circular aperture, contributing to smooth and aesthetically pleasing bokeh in out-of-focus areas. This enhances the overall visual appeal of your images, particularly in portrait and close-up photography.

Summary:

The Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM Lens is a highly capable and budget-friendly prime lens that offers a blend of fast aperture, compact design, and reliable performance. With its f/1.8 maximum aperture, quiet STM autofocus, and versatile 50mm focal length, this lens is well-suited for a variety of photography styles, including portraits, street photography, and everyday shooting. Its affordable price makes it an excellent choice for photographers seeking high-quality results without breaking the bank, making it a valuable addition to any Canon RF-mount mirrorless camera system.

A Fun and Wild Ride
Format: Kindle
Two brothers in arms go on amazing adventures, face impossible odds, and grow in ways they never expected. Down to earth, humble, and relatable characters with a continuously evolving storyline, what more could you ask for? Cool weapons and abilities? Epic battles? Magic? Yeah, it’s got all that too. This series just became a must read on my LitRPG recommendation list.

Excellent Parallel Worlds and Xianxia Story
Format: Kindle
The story follows two affable characters, Rugrat and Eric. Rugrat is a wonderfully written redneck and Erik plays the role of an exasperated and loyal brother in arms. The two main characters interactions between each other bring interesting banter to the different parts of the story that other wise progress too slowly. It’s a cultivation novel and the main characters often take a great deal of time learning more about the system and how they can leverage its powers. The magic system in world combines well with the parallel world aspect, and the main characters thrive in their new environment. The stats, like in many other stories in this genre, serve as relatively arbitrary plot pieces that could be easily handled without the stats. The potential for growth and the magic systems interesting interactions with modern technology makes the magic satisfying to read about. My favorite aspect of the story so far is the clashing of the honorable soldier mentality with the “might makes right” philosophy of martial arts cultivation novels. Though it’s clear the author heavily favors one philosophy over the other. A great read, and an excellent novel to enjoy as an audiobook.

Xianxia-inspired novel I can actually read
Format: Kindle
I've read (or attempted to read) several wuxia/xianxia stories in the past. This is probably the best of that genre that I've tried. I know, such a titillating opening statement, but hear me out: this story is very good. NOT great, but not the typical "my eyes wish to bleed from my skull" experience, either. Most Chinese fantasy is bad. I wish that were not so, hence me trying to find good stories. In general, the stories don't make a lot of sense, and the grammar and repetitive phrasing makes the translations a generally terrible experience. Coming from a background of looking at college student papers, I've had my fill of bad grammar and poor sentence structure; I don't need more. With an English speaking author at the helm, however, this was a pleasant ride. There were a few grammatical errors but nothing to get my pants in a twist over. The story mostly makes sense, with only the two main characters occasionally speaking like locals throwing me off a bit, as well as the two of them growing so used to elements of their surroundings and quest rewards. It just felt a little unnatural in places. My biggest gripe is how they suddenly sprout knowledge of city planning and infrastructure. That really felt out of character, and came out of left field. Other than that, I think this was a solid first entry for this series.
