Music critics love when pop-punk bands mature, but most loyal listeners hate it, since it so often means stepping away from the eternally adolescent genre they love and into territory that may be too new, too different. It's rare, then, that a maturing pop-punk band can satisfy both the music critic and loyal listener, but Ontario's Safe to Say finds the balance on Down in the Dark. This balance wasn't struck without some toil, though, says singer and guitarist Brad Garica, who spent a year privately piecing together melodies on voice memos and scraps of paper, choosing not to share the songs with the band, even as they entered the studio. Though the writing process made recording more complicated, it also allowed Safe to Say's creativity to flourish. "We were tracking drums last," Garcia says, "so it gave us the freedom to exhaust all of our ideas before solidifying anything. We also weren't entirely done writing, so the album started to solidify itself as we tracked it." The result of this unconventional process is an unconventional product, one that embraces the pop-punk that Safe to Say mastered on their previous EP Hiding Games even as it breaks it's own rules.

When a pop-science author with a sense of humor alienates half his readership because ...

This is a short but interesting and truly fascinating book, and I liked the author's description of what to do with your first alien encounter. IN part because my wife and I are writing a novel on a famous UFO encounter that occurred in rural Kentucky in 1955, and gave us the term "little green men.
" I used to write for UFO Magazine, and have written books on the subject that were NOT novels, but factual (as I see them) real encounters with something Not of This Earth. How this author addressed these incidents is a hoot. Or it was ...
This book remined me of Max Brook's first book on Zombies, yhe one that led up to his World War Z book. HOWEVER, at some point, this otherwise interesting Astro-physicist felt he had to vent his own personal political spleen for or against Trump. I was NOT interested in his views - I imagine if he reads my forthcoming book on UFOs, or the next one in the queue, on how to market and promote your books, he won't be interested in my political beliefs (almost certainly I'm either too far to the Left or too far to the Right for his taste). I thought he was brilliant. Now I see him "alienating" half of his potential reading audience, which isn't at all brilliant. It might even be "dumb as a tree stump."
It's different from some authors/scholars - for instance, military historian Victor Davis Hansen of the Hoover Institute at Stanford University has written a book about his political preference, and does a daily (or more frequent} video blog on the subject, but when he sets out to dissect the Peloponnesian Wars or the current war on Iranian terror, he treats these as an historian, and not as an opinionated political activist.
He may offend or reinforce my historical views, but when it comes to his areas of expertise (his recent World Wars Two book about how WW-II was really five or six different wars going on at the same time) is brilliant, regardless of his political views, which are not material to his remarkable historical scholarship.
The author of Take Me To Your Leader should have taken a page from VDH's book (literally and figuratively). I'm not sure I can actually go back to where I left off and still appreciate what this scientist says about UFOs and aliens (tongue firmly planted in cheek - it's a funny book) without fuming about his political views.
Our nation is so politically divided that I would say to all writers - unless they're writing about politics, don't show your views to your reader - you'll P.O. half of them, at least.
Oh, well, it was fun (and funny) while it lasted.

Quick read, entertaining & informative
Format: Hardcover
This book can be enjoyed on several levels. It could be tongue-in-cheek or satire, but is also backed by facts and conjecture by one of the world’s greatest scientific thinkers. I think Dr. Tyson had fun writing it, and i certainly had fun reading it. And I learned a lot.

Aliens: Know what to expect!
Format: Audiobook
This is a really fun review of Earth's obsession with alien life, what we have historically expected of aliens--and what they might expect of us.
If you are a long-time listener of the author or a viewer of his YouTube show (Star Talk), you have probably heard much of what NDT has to say on this subject already--here and there as he picks his way thru the universe, but why not listen to him now again as he focuses his energies on just this alien subject? If you want an enjoyable read, it will be worth your time. If you're not a long-time listener of NDT... and you have any interest in aliens at all, then you DEFINITELY should give this book a go. It is full of thoughtful insights from a man who has devoted his life to the science and 'cultural impact' of the stars.
I listened to the Audible version wherein NDT reads his own book aloud for you. His efforts really allow you to gain his insights... And his strong sense of humor--in equal doses.

My son is actually motivated to do a workbook
Format: Paperback
My Kindergartener finished homeschool online early and we have been doing a page a day and he loves it and loves to earn a sticker after each day and put it on his chart. I love how engaging the workbook is and how it introduces some 1st grade concepts. Would highly recommend.
