How West African gold and trade across the Sahara were central to the medieval world

The Sahara Desert was a thriving crossroads of exchange for West Africa, North Africa, the Middle East, and Europe in the medieval period. Fueling this exchange was West African gold, prized for its purity and used for minting currencies and adorning luxury objects such as jewelry, textiles, and religious objects. Caravans made the arduous journey by camel southward across the Sahara carrying goods for trade--glass vessels and beads, glazed ceramics, copper, books, and foodstuffs, including salt, which was obtained in the middle of the desert. Northward, the journey brought not only gold but also ivory, animal hides and leatherwork, spices, and captives from West Africa forced into slavery.

Caravans of Gold, Fragments in Time draws on the latest archaeological discoveries and art historical research to construct a compelling look at medieval trans-Saharan exchange and its legacy. Contributors from diverse disciplines present case studies that form a rich portrayal of a distant time. Topics include descriptions of key medieval cities around the Sahara; networks of exchange that contributed to the circulation of gold, copper, and ivory and their associated art forms; and medieval glass bead production in West Africa's forest region. The volume also reflects on Morocco's Gnawa material culture, associated with descendants of West African slaves, and movements of people across the Sahara today.

Featuring a wealth of color images, this fascinating book demonstrates how the rootedness of place, culture, and tradition is closely tied to the circulation of people, objects, and ideas. These "fragments in time" offer irrefutable evidence of the key role that Africa played in medieval history and promote a new understanding of the past and the present.

AMAZING PRODUCT!
I am so impressed by these! It’s winter and my skin has been so sensitive, dry, flaky patches… I’ve tried so many products! I saw a few videos of these being used decided since there were so many independent videos about them I’d try! O.M.G!!! I should have taken a before and after! After only 1 use my face feels sooo much better. No more dry, flakiness. They were extremely easy to use. I have a bit more of a round face and they fit just fine (went up a little higher on my hairline but not bad). Doesn’t leave your skin feeling sticky, just hydrated! 100% will buy again!

Really Nice Hydrating Toner Pads
Scent: Collagen, Scent: Collagen
At 52, post-menopausal, with dry and increasingly sensitive skin, I’m very selective about toner pads. Many of them either feel too thin and ineffective or too active and irritating. These landed right in the middle in the best possible way — gentle, hydrating, and very easy to use. The first thing I noticed is how well these pads are saturated. They’re not dripping, but they hold enough product to comfortably treat the entire face. The gel texture also makes them feel a little more substantial than typical toner pads, which I really like. They feel cooling and comfortable on the skin. What I notice most after using them is how hydrated and slightly plumped my skin looks. This isn’t dramatic or instant, but it’s the kind of improvement that makes your skin look healthier and more comfortable. My skin feels smoother and softer, and it layers very well with the rest of my routine. They also feel very lightweight. There’s no sticky or heavy residue, and once the essence absorbs, my skin just feels hydrated and calm. I can easily follow with serums and moisturizer without any pilling. I also appreciate that these pads are gentle and very skin-compatible. I’ve had no irritation, redness, or sensitivity, even on days when my skin is feeling more reactive. At this stage, that matters more than aggressive results. In terms of moisture, these do a really nice job. My skin feels comfortable after using them, and they work well as a prep step before the rest of my routine. On some mornings, they even give enough hydration that I don’t feel rushed to apply moisturizer immediately. Fragrance is also worth mentioning. The scent is very light and subtle, and it doesn’t linger. I’m careful about fragrance, and these didn’t cause any sensitivity or irritation. Another thing I like is how easy they are to use. They’re quick, convenient, and a nice step when I want hydration without adding another liquid toner. Overall, these feel like a supportive, hydrating step that helps improve overall skin quality over time. They’re gentle, comfortable, and easy to incorporate into a daily routine.
