He has a point, of course, but if Townes is No. 1, Clark is No. 1A. Workbench Songs goes a mighty long way to proving that true. It's not just another collection of his finely crafted songs, his first for a new label. It's one of the best albums of his career. What's continually amazing about Clark is his ability to capture a sweeping range of emotions and everyday occurrences in song, from joy and pain to roadhouse rambunctious and Mexicans visiting Graceland, with exquisite simplicity and captivating lucidity. "Here his co-writers are the best of their ilk, Rodney Crowell, Gary Nicholson, Darrell Scott, Lee Roy Parnell, and longtime collaborator Verlon Thompson, but there's also a chilling version of Van Zandt's "No Lonesome Tune," perhaps to demonstrate his point. Songs like Celtic flavored set opener, "Walkin' Man," the comically breezy "Tornado Time in Texas," and the universally recognizable scene set in "Out in the Parkin' Lot" stand out on a collection that may be from the workbench but is nowhere near workmanlike."

Totally unique and enchanting
A bittersweet and all too believable story of young love, simplified and stylized, but with a lot of emotional truth at its heart. Every frame is a visual delight, Catherine Deneuve is hypnotic, and the equally gorgeous Nino Castelnuovo plays his part with a sweetness and grace that are totally disarming.
I knew it was a musical, but I did not realize going in that all of the dialogue is sung. There's a lot of humor in hearing even the most prosaic interactions -- saying good afternoon to the mailman, an argument between a mother and her teenage daughter -- set to music. And the soundtrack serves to amplify the joy and excitement of certain quotidian pleasures, as in the first scene when the mechanics are leaving work and discussing their plans for the evening.
This is a totally unique and enchanting movie. It has the heart of a French movie from the 60's, with a dash of the frothy artifice of a Hollywood musical. The result is a little slice of perfection.

Amazon eGift Card Makes a Great Gift and So Easy to Give

I was so thankful that I could get this gift card on the Amazon website because I just had back surgery and I couldn't get out to the store to get my daughter something for helping me for a week. I just really wanted to show her my appreciation for everything she had done. I didn't know that you could do this and then I Googled it and it said I could. It was so effortlessly and so easy to do. I definitely will be doing this in the future now that I know how well it went.
