About the work

Ana Prata has created Relatives, 2024 especially for Whitechapel Gallery to accompany the exhibition Lygia Clark: The I and the You, 2 Oct 2024 – 12 Jan 2025.

The edition comprises a small folding screen or ‘biombo’ in Portuguese. Made of wood, fabric, translucent plastic, and lithographic print, Relatives is an extension of previous works, where the artist uses the folding screen as a structure for her paintings, allowing them to move away from the wall.  
At this particular scale, there's a sense of handling involved, which for Prata relates to the work of Lygia Clark, though poetically moving in a different direction. Prata is interested in the edition as an object; with the folding screen, she creates an environment for the print to exist, adding elements to it; layers, patterns and luminosities. The title Relatives refers to the domestic aspects of the work, and at the same time it has the meaning of related parts and elements.

About the artist

Ana Prata (b. 1980, Sete Lagoas, Brazil) lives and works in São Paulo. Ana Prata's pictorial research brings together components from modernist repertoires and elements of common everyday life. From large scales to small formats, her paintings primarily result from her engagement with materials and the practical experience of the studio. Working with humor on aspects of interiority and intimacy, Ana Prata establishes her practice as an exercise of her critical spirit. By appropriating established genres from art history, her gaze remains attentive to the new meanings her paintings can assume, while her practice precisely elaborates a pictorial vocabulary that diverges from the expected.
