About Gardener of the Forest 

Jane's drawing was inspired by LCRP’s orphan chimpanzees and chimpanzees’ epithet ‘gardeners of the forest­’, highlighting their importance as a keystone species. Woven through the chimpanzee’s fur are layers of plants and trees native to Liberia as well as Liberian animal species–many threatened with extinction– that depend on the critical role of chimpanzees in maintaining forests. These species include leopard, Diana monkey, black-casqued hornbill, African golden cat, pygmy hippopotamus, African dwarf crocodile, white-necked rockfowl, Tai forest treefrog, rhinoceros viper, African straw-coloured fruit bat, black-bellied pangolin, crowned eagle, bongo, large striped swordtail, African forest elephant, African giant swallowtail and Timneh parrot. As if forest spectres, the animals become fainter in recognition of their vulnerability. The infant chimpanzee cradled in the larger chimpanzee’s palm reaches out to touch the swallowtail butterfly in a gesture that symbolises hope for the preservation of chimpanzees and their forest habitat through LCRP’s vital work. Also included is a portrait of Princess, beloved dog of LCRP co-founders Jenny and Jimmy Desmond and friend to the sanctuary’s orphan chimpanzees.
