DESCRIPTION:

Beautiful old hand colored map of Breslau (Wroclaw) in Lower Silesia Province. The map has several colored cartouches, filled with special craftsmanship and sophistication. They contain information in Latin. There is also a small birdeye view of Wroclaw in the lower right corner. The map clearly shows the city walls of Breslau, which have several gates and towers. Each tower and gate is labeled with its name. The city is depicted in great detail, including its streets, buildings, and public structures. The cartographer used different colors to distinguish key features such as water bodies, parks, gardens, churches, monasteries, and other notable landmarks. The engraving details appear sharp and precise. Textual inscriptions, street names, and building labels are clearly visible and easily legible. Colors are used meticulously to represent various aspects of the urban landscape and topography. Additionally, it displays bridges spanning the Oder River, symbolizing key transportation routes. The map includes a legend located in the lower left corner, providing all the necessary explanations and symbols used on the map. It serves as a valuable historical document, providing insights into the city's historical development and significance during the 17th century. One flaw of the map is its notably uneven and jagged upper edge, which may be considered a slight imperfection in its overall presentation. Johannes Janssonius also known as Jan Jansson was born in 1588 in Arnhem, Netherlands. His father was a bookseller and publisher (Jan Janszoon the Elder). When he married the daughter of the cartographer Jodocus Hondius he also set up a business as a book publisher in Amsterdam. His first map was published in 1616. Around 15 years later he set up a partnership with his brother in law Hondius and issued further editions of the Mercator/Hondius atlas. After his death in 1664, his heirs still published several maps. Many of his plates have been acquired by Pieter Schenk and Gerard Valk.

Bad book for SOA exam, but oh well.
Format: Paperback
While required by Society of Actuaries as the textbook for Short Term Actuarial Models exam, I could not recommend this textbook for any other purposes. Written by two Canadian actuaries, a lot of terms and explanations used in this textbook cannot be transferred into US P&C insurance. It fails to explains insurance's purpose and products effectively and as an intro book with unnecessary sentences to deliver personal thoughts. It is also a mess in following sections on ratemaking and reserving. I cannot sense a flow from this book that guides readers in an approachable manner. Overall, author compromises the size AND the quality.
