About the work
From 1969 his signature inverted figures appeared, Baselitz seeing in this a way of combining the abstract expressionistic with the figure as iconic motif. This thematic has continued to the present day in his paintings, drawings, etchings, and woodcuts.
Having worked for many years against the mainstream of contemporary art, Baselitz has firmly established his reputation internationally, along-side his influence on the young German Neo-Expressionist painters, referred to in Germany as the ‘Neue Wilden’.

About the artist
German painter, draughtsman, printmaker and sculptor Georg Baselitz was born in Deutschbaselitz, Saxony in 1938. After studying at Hochschule für Bildende Künste in East Berlin in 1956 and Hochschule der Bildenden Künste in West Berlin he became interested in the theoretical writings of painters such as Kandinsky and Malevich.
During the early 1960s Baselitz rebelled against the dominance of abstract painting, championing instead a more expressionistic and figurative art form with its origins in works produced by outsider artists. His work began to feature figures as ‘heroes’, ‘rebels’, and ‘shepherds’—sometimes depicted as physically disabled but presented stylistically as modern,’ otherworldly’ heroes.
