An illusionist is performing his astounding tricks when an audience member is killed by another. This mystery chronicles the attempts of the magician to find out whodunit and why. This film is a precursor to the movie 'Chandu the Magician' released the following year, which was then adapted to the serial cliffhanger 'The Return of Chandu'.
Chandu the Magician (1932) (Movie)
Having mastered teleportation and other mystical powers after studying with Indian yogis for three years, Frank Chandler (Edmund Lowe) returns home. Frank hopes he won't have to use his talents, but his hand is forced when his sister Dorothy's (Virginia Hammond) inventor husband, Robert (Henry B. Walthall), is kidnapped by the evil Roxor (Bela Lugosi). The villainous mastermind wants to use Robert's new creation, a death ray, to cause widespread destruction, and only Frank can stop him.
The Return of Chandu (1934) (12 Chapter Serial Cliffhanger)
The twelve chapters of The Return of Chandu follow Chandu and his family (his sister, his nephew, and his niece) on various adventures while they struggle, by both magical and not-so-magical means, to rescue and protect Princess Nadji from the Sect of Ubasti. Their journey brings them finally to the land of Lemuria itself, where Chandu must decide whether he can renounce his love for Nadji in order to save her life.
