Silkis Description
Silkis is an ointment applied to the skin for treating psoriasis, and it contains a form of vitamin D.
It helps slow down the quick production of skin cells that leads to psoriasis.
Apply a thin layer of ointment twice daily.

What is Silkis?

Silkis is an ointment applied to the skin that contains calcitriol, a form of vitamin D. It's used for treating mild to moderate psoriasis. Psoriasis occurs when your body makes skin cells too rapidly, and Silkis helps slow down this overproduction of skin cells.

Silkis is only available with a prescription, so a clinician must ensure it's safe for you before use. Share details about your health in our online consultation, and we'll let you know if Silkis is suitable for you – and prescribe it if it is.

How does Silkis work?

Silkis contains calcitriol as its active ingredient, which is a form of vitamin D. This means it works on the vitamin D receptor to control how cells grow, what roles they perform, and how the immune system functions. It helps slow down the fast growth of skin cells, which can reduce the scaling and plaques associated with psoriasis.

Research over both long and short periods has shown that calcitriol is effective in treating psoriasis and carries a low risk of side effects. It can also be used alongside corticosteroids, another psoriasis treatment, to allow for a reduced corticosteroid dose, which in turn lowers the risk of side effects associated with them.

Are there different forms of Silkis?

Silkis is available solely as an ointment, with each gram containing 3 micrograms of calcitriol. If you feel that Silkis isn't the right strength for your psoriasis, whether too weak or too strong, have a chat with your clinician about other treatment options.

How is Silkis different from other treatments for psoriasis?

Silkis is a treatment for psoriasis that contains only vitamin D. For more moderate to severe cases, there are treatments available that combine corticosteroids with vitamin D. Vitamin D helps slow down the production of new skin cells, while the corticosteroid works by 'turning off' the genes responsible for inflammation.

Corticosteroids work by reducing inflammation, which should help relieve psoriasis symptoms, while vitamin D addresses the underlying cause. Studies indicate that vitamin D can enhance the effectiveness of corticosteroids when used together, allowing you to use a lower dose of steroids and for a shorter period.

If you're seeking an alternative treatment for mild to moderate psoriasis, you might consider a coal tar product like Psoriderm or Evorex. Coal tar treatments can help reduce inflammation to ease psoriasis symptoms and also slow down the quick production of new skin cells that cause psoriasis.

They may also cause fewer side effects compared to other psoriasis treatments and can be used alongside other therapies, like phototherapy.

Emollients are another type of topical treatment for psoriasis. These moisturisers help to hydrate your skin, relieve itching and discomfort, and lessen scaling. Using other topical treatments on moisturised skin might make them work better, so you could use an emollient along with another medication.

How well does Silkis work for psoriasis?

Silkis has been shown to be effective and safe for treating psoriasis both in the short and long term. In two clinical trials where participants applied calcitriol or a placebo twice daily, 34% of those using calcitriol saw their psoriasis clear up or reduce to minimal levels. This is compared to 12% and 22.5% in the first and second studies, respectively. Calcitriol also helped reduce symptoms like plaque elevation, scaling, redness, and itching more effectively than the placebo.

Calcitriol ointment rarely causes skin irritation and, unlike some other psoriasis treatments, it doesn't increase your sensitivity to the sun.

No match for 3 month old puppy!
Color: Blue
I was really hopeful this would last a while, but 5 minutes out of the box and my 3 month old puppy has chewed two chunks out of the blue part already - seems this is too soft for puppy teeth, and it specifically claims to be good for puppy teething. 5 minutes of play is not worth paying for. Maybe if the material had been more substantial, this could have been great for high activity level puppies. My pup had no trouble carrying it around, so it wasn't too heavy, and it was easy to play fetch with as well. For reference, my pup is a mixed breed - labrador, poodle, newfoundland.

Best ever dog toy
Color: Pink
This is such the clever toy and actually I think it makes my pup more clever too. The ball is tough enough to withstand excessive chewing. I really can’t say enough good things about this particular dog toy. This will keep my dogs attention for such a long period of time and you can truly just watch the wheels turning in his head as he figures out how to get the food out would buy again and I probably will just to have a back up.

Great for 22 pound mini schnauzer/mini greyhound mix
Color: Pink
I have a dog that is half miniature schnauzer and they love to sniff and snuffle. He is enjoying this ball. I put the little freeze dried liver cubes in it and he will play with it until he gets them all out, and maybe keep playing for a bit. I can't give it 5 stars because I don't know quite how I'm going to clean the inside of it. I can't speak for how well it cleans his teeth because he hasn't had it that long. It is sturdy. He's a 22 pound medium size dog and I'm confident he cannot chew it to the point of destroying it. He's barely made a scratch on it so it may break down over time but it's not something a small or medium dog should be able to chew through the first day. He's had it about 2 weeks and we use it every day and it's holding up very well. It's not interesting enough to him to play with it without treats in it but he rarely plays with a toy unless I'm actively playing with the other end of the toy or throwing it for him to chase (part Italian greyhound too so he does like chasing) but he will get excited when he sees this ball as he knows treats are going to be in it. This one is a good size for him and he can pick it up with his teeth. (This is the hot pink one with the blue ball inside) Definitely worth the price if I can figure out how to sufficiently clean inside of it. So far rinsing with warm water seems to keep it hygienic. It's silicone so everything pretty much slides out. I wouldn't put any moist treats in it though. It's quiet. No squeaker, but he has plenty of toys that squeak and we didn't get it for that. It definitely appeals to his sniffing and snuffling instincts.
