The pendant is hallmarked 585 for 14ct gold and bears the Austrian horse’s head mark with the letter “W”, indicating it was assayed in Vienna. This mark was used following the breakup of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, between 1922 and 1925, when Austrian gold was stamped with a fineness mark alongside a town letter “W” denoting Wien (Vienna).
Spider jewels were particularly fashionable in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In jewellery symbolism, the spider represents patience, creativity and quiet strength — weaving its web with precision and artistry. During the Art Deco period, naturalistic motifs were often reinterpreted with clean lines and sculptural simplicity, as seen here.
