Onkyo DX-C390 6-Disc Carousel CD Changer at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The DX-C390 is a 6-disc carousel CD changer from Onkyo (Osaka, Japan), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Designed for music lovers who want both audiophile-grade playback and the convenience of uninterrupted listening, it combines a high-precision multi-bit D/A converter with 128x oversampling and Onkyo's proprietary VLSC (Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry) and VQA (Vector Quantizer Audio) technologies for a cleaner, smoother analogue output. The exclusive Direct Digital Path replaces conventional PCB copper traces with a heavy-gauge shielded cable from the laser assembly to the rear panel outputs, protecting the digital bitstream from circuit noise. The DX-C390 holds six discs, allows changing five discs while the sixth is still playing, and supports Audio CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and MP3-format discs. RCA analogue, optical, and coaxial digital outputs connect to any hi-fi amplifier or external DAC, and the RI (Remote Interactive) jack enables integrated control with compatible Onkyo components.

VLSC, VQA, and Direct Digital Path

Three proprietary Onkyo technologies work together in the DX-C390 to preserve signal purity from disc to output. VLSC, or Vector Linear Shaping Circuitry, applies advanced shaping algorithms to the post-DAC analogue output to identify and suppress the pulse noise that digital-to-analogue conversion inherently generates, removing high-frequency grain from the signal before it reaches the output terminals. VQA, or Vector Quantizer Audio, is Onkyo's precision DAC technology that governs how the multi-bit converter reconstructs the analogue waveform from the disc's digital data, using a 128x oversampling digital filter running at 352.8 kHz to smooth the reconstructed signal and minimise quantisation error. Direct Digital Path is an engineering choice unique to the DX-C390 at its price level: rather than routing the digital bitstream from the laser assembly through the copper traces of the main circuit board, Onkyo uses a heavy-gauge, high-purity, heavily shielded cable to carry the signal directly from the disc mechanism to the rear panel outputs. This prevents the surrounding switching circuits from coupling electromagnetic interference into the delicate digital audio data before it reaches the DAC or the digital outputs.

Six-Disc Carousel and Continuous Playback

The DX-C390's carousel mechanism accepts up to six discs simultaneously, loaded via a motorised tray that rotates the carousel to access any disc without manual intervention. A key practical advantage is the ability to change five discs while the sixth remains active and playing, which eliminates the interruptions to music playback that are unavoidable with single-disc players. An illuminated light above the loading bay makes disc identification and swapping convenient in low-light listening environments. The ultra-quiet loading mechanism suppresses the mechanical noise of the carousel motor, preserving the listening environment during disc changes. Forty-track programming allows building a custom playlist from tracks across any of the loaded discs, and six repeat modes cover single track, single disc, all discs, and combination modes for flexible long-form listening. Random playback shuffles tracks across all loaded discs for a varied listening experience without manual interaction.

Connectivity and System Integration

The DX-C390's rear panel provides stereo RCA analogue outputs, one optical TOSLINK digital output, and one coaxial RCA digital output, covering both analogue and digital connection to any downstream component. The optical and coaxial outputs carry the raw PCM digital bitstream from the disc, allowing an external DAC in a connected amplifier or a dedicated outboard converter to perform its own digital-to-analogue conversion independently of the DX-C390's onboard VQA stage. An RI (Remote Interactive) jack enables control integration with compatible Onkyo amplifiers and receivers that support the RI protocol, allowing the amplifier to automatically switch to the CD input when the DX-C390 begins playback. The full-function RI remote provides access to all playback, programming, and repeat functions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Onkyo DX-C390?

The Onkyo DX-C390 is a 6-disc carousel CD changer featuring a multi-bit D/A converter with 128x oversampling, VLSC pulse noise reduction, VQA precision DAC technology, and a Direct Digital Path shielded cable from the laser assembly to the outputs. It holds six discs, allows changing five while one plays, programs up to 40 tracks across loaded discs, and provides RCA analogue, optical, and coaxial digital outputs with RI remote integration. It is available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada.

How does the Onkyo DX-C390 compare to a single-disc CD player like the Onkyo C-30?

The DX-C390 and C-30 serve different priorities within the CD player category. The DX-C390's six-disc carousel delivers uninterrupted listening for extended sessions, with the ability to swap five discs while one plays and 40-track programming across all loaded discs, making it the better choice for listeners who want convenience and long playback capability. The C-30 is a single-disc player from the Icon Series focused on maximum resolution from each disc, featuring a 24-bit/192 kHz DAC and the ±10 PPM high-precision clock of the newer Icon Series platform. Both share Onkyo's VLSC technology and brushed aluminium front panel construction. For listeners who value catalogue access and session continuity, the DX-C390 is the practical choice; for those focused on the absolute best playback from individual discs, the C-30 is the more refined single-disc solution.

What is Direct Digital Path and why does it matter?

In most CD players, the digital audio signal travels from the laser pickup assembly to the DAC and output circuitry through the copper traces etched into the main circuit board. These traces are physically close to power supply circuits, motor control circuits, and other switching components that generate electromagnetic interference. This interference can couple into the digital signal path and add noise to the bitstream before it reaches the DAC. Direct Digital Path replaces the PCB trace route with a dedicated heavy-gauge, high-purity, heavily shielded cable that runs the digital signal directly from the laser assembly to the rear panel outputs, isolating it from the surrounding circuit noise and preserving the integrity of the digital bitstream.

Can the DX-C390 be used as a CD transport with an external DAC?

Yes, the DX-C390 provides both optical TOSLINK and coaxial RCA digital outputs that carry 16-bit/44.1 kHz PCM from the transport directly to an external DAC. Connecting via the digital output bypasses the onboard multi-bit D/A converter and VQA analogue stage entirely, allowing the external converter to perform its own digital-to-analogue conversion. This is useful for listeners who have a high-quality outboard DAC or whose amplifier or preamplifier includes a high-specification internal DAC.

What playback formats does the DX-C390 support?

The DX-C390 plays standard Audio CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs containing either standard audio recordings or MP3 music files burned to disc. This covers commercially pressed CDs as well as home-burned discs of ripped music files, making it broadly compatible with the varied disc collections that many listeners have accumulated. WMA format files on CD-R/CD-RW are not listed as supported on the DX-C390, distinguishing it from the C-30 in this respect.

Where can I buy the Onkyo DX-C390 in Toronto or Canada?

The Onkyo DX-C390 is available at Vinyl Sound, an authorised Onkyo dealer in Toronto, Canada. Vinyl Sound carries the full Onkyo CD player lineup including the DX-C390 and the Icon Series C-30, and can advise on integrating either model into a complete two-channel music system.

Excellent Easter Devotional
Format: Paperback
This thirty-day Easter Devotional is just as edifying as any writing from Paul David Tripp. Each day offers opportunity for context, reflection, application, and prayer, ever pointing more to the hope of the resurrection as the day draws near. This would be an excellent devotional to lead one's family through or to read as an individual. The book is well constructed as far as paper back goes, and a wonderful value for the quality of content. It's printing is clearly legible and well centered on each page for easy readability, and the book is comfortable to hold. The hope of the gospel shines brilliantly in this short seasonal devotional. My understanding of how old testament passages point to the fulfillment of Christ has been deepened, thus broadening my understanding of the text in daily Bible study. I highly recommend this particular book, as well as many others from this author! May it build every reader up in the full knowledge of God which bears much good fruit in love and good deeds, as we not only rejoice in what has been accomplished already, but also look forward to what God has to come upon the Savior and Judge's return. May all glory, honor, blessing and praise be to Him who has conquered the grave on behalf of the redeemed.

Excellent devotion book for any seasons
Format: Paperback
Didn't expect much when I ordered this devotional. After starting the first day, I realize this is an excellent devotional not just for Easter. Content: It covers the whole bible from Genesis all the way to Revolution. Of course, it doesn't cover every single book or every single detail in the bible. But rather than just talking about Jesus in the four gospels to His resurrection, it starts from the very beginning (Genesis) and talks about how sins entered the world and why Jesus came to Earth to save us from sin all the way to the completion of the salvation plan (Revelations). It gives a much better scope then just focusing on the events in Easter alone. Length of each devotion: There are 30 days of devotions. Each day is only a 2 page read which is good for people who just started or trying to get back to the habit of daily devotions. It doesn't take much time so it's less intimidating and there is no excuse not to do it. The structure of each devotion: There is the main bible passage, a personal sharing/message from the author as well as a biblical teaching based on the passage of the day. There there is a short reflection section and a sample prayer leading us to respond. The structure is well laid out for a concise but meaning devotion. The passage and the sharing in each day is very insightful and though provoking. Overall, this is a great devotional that I highly recommended.

Thoughtful Easter devotional, though the writing style may not resonate with everyone
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
As Easter approaches, I was interested in spending some time with this devotional. One thing I appreciated right away is how Paul David Tripp connects passages from across the Bible to the deeper meaning of Easter. The devotional begins with references in the Old Testament and traces the thread of prophecy forward toward the ultimate sacrifice and resurrection. That connection between early scripture and the events of Easter is an important foundation of the Christian story, and the book highlights it well. What I liked: Carefully selected Bible passages that connect Old Testament prophecy with the Easter story A devotional structure that encourages reflection throughout the season An accessible way to revisit the narrative from prophecy to resurrection Where it didn’t fully connect for me: The author’s narrative style may be a matter of personal preference. His writing is often elegant and reflective, but at times it felt somewhat fragmented or incomplete to me. I personally tend to connect more with a slightly more straightforward, conversational style of devotional writing. That said, this doesn’t mean the book lacks value. Readers who appreciate a more poetic or contemplative tone may find it quite meaningful. Overall: Even though the writing style wasn’t a perfect fit for me, this is still a worthwhile Easter devotional. It provides a thoughtful way to reflect on the journey from prophecy to resurrection and would make a good companion for the Easter season.

Equally deep and approachable devotional
Format: Paperback
This really is an everyday devotional in that it is rich and engaging whether going through it for the Lenten season or any other time of the year. It focuses on the Gospel message from our sin and need for a Savior, through the Lord’s redemptive plan and faithful fulfillment through Jesus. Each daily entry is just two pages, but has a balance of depth and approachability that makes it feel full and spiritually satisfying. The author’s personal stories and way of framing the biblical passages is relatable, and I was immediately drawn into it. I especially like how the devotional begins with the Old Testament scriptures, revealing themes and prophetic pictures that I hadn’t seen before, and then gradually works into the New Testament, even through Revelation! If going through this during Lent, the topics build up the anticipation for Resurrection Sunday and are arranged very meaningfully. The reflection questions are also really good at bringing out deep reflections and a personal response to the biblical passage and thematic focus of the devotional. I’ve made it through most of the devotional at this point, and am thoroughly enjoying it. Highly recommend!

Love this!
Format: Paperback
I recently received this christian daily devotional book and here’s my quick thoughts on it: I think that the condition of the book is great and it doesn’t feel cheap or like it would rip very easily. I think this is a good quality paper and material. I admire this daily devotional book because it is something great to read as soon as you wake up, preparing your day under Christs’ armor. I actually have another daily devotional book which is a year long and it gives encouragement through scripture directly from the word of God. That book is great and it’s amazing reading as soon as I wake up every morning. This book is nothing short of how good that one is and I just love how this one is structured. Overall, I highly recommend this every day Christian devotional book to anyone looking for one and even as a gift for someone! I love this!
