Understanding Edward Burne-Jones: A Visionary of the Pre-Raphaelite Movement
Life and Artistic Journey of Edward Burne-Jones
Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was a prominent figure in the Pre-Raphaelite movement, known for his romantic and mystical themes. Born in Birmingham, England, he initially pursued a career in theology before turning to art. His studies at the Birmingham School of Art and later at the Royal Academy shaped his unique style. Burne-Jones became a close associate of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and William Morris, both of whom greatly influenced his artistic vision. His works often reflect a deep fascination with mythology, literature, and the human experience, making him a key player in the Victorian art scene.Influences and Inspirations Behind His Work
Burne-Jones drew inspiration from various sources, including medieval literature, classical mythology, and the works of the Old Masters. His interest in the Arthurian legends, particularly the tale of Merlin and Vivien, is evident in "The Beguiling of Merlin." The artist's exposure to the writings of Alfred Lord Tennyson and the romantic ideals of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood fueled his imagination. This painting encapsulates the themes of enchantment, love, and betrayal, showcasing Burne-Jones's ability to weave complex narratives through visual art.Unveiling the Themes of Enchantment and Deception
The Mythical Narrative of Merlin and Vivien
"The Beguiling of Merlin" portrays the captivating story of Merlin, the legendary wizard, and Vivien, a seductive enchantress. In this narrative, Vivien seeks to manipulate Merlin's magical powers for her own gain. The painting captures a pivotal moment where Vivien's charm and cunning draw Merlin into her web of deception. This tale of love intertwined with betrayal resonates deeply, reflecting the complexities of human relationships and the consequences of desire.Symbolism of Love and Betrayal in the Painting
The painting is rich in symbolism, representing the duality of love and betrayal. Vivien's alluring gaze and delicate features contrast sharply with Merlin's vulnerable expression. This juxtaposition highlights the tension between trust and treachery. The lush, dreamlike background further enhances the sense of enchantment, inviting viewers to explore the deeper meanings behind the characters' interactions. The use of floral motifs symbolizes both beauty and the fleeting nature of love, reinforcing the painting's themes.Visual Elements: A Closer Look at Composition and Color
Color Palette: The Use of Rich Hues and Textures
Burne-Jones employed a vibrant color palette in "The Beguiling of Merlin," utilizing deep reds, greens, and golds to evoke a sense of opulence and mystery. The rich hues create a dreamlike atmosphere, drawing the viewer into the enchanting world of the characters. The textures in the fabric of Vivien's gown and the natural elements in the background add depth and realism, showcasing Burne-Jones's mastery of oil painting techniques.Composition Techniques: Balance and Focus in the Artwork
The composition of the painting is carefully balanced, with Vivien positioned prominently in the foreground, capturing the viewer's attention. Merlin, slightly receding into the background, creates a sense of depth and perspective. This arrangement emphasizes the power dynamics between the characters, highlighting Vivien's dominance in the scene. The flowing lines and curves guide the viewer's eye throughout the artwork, enhancing the overall sense of movement and fluidity.Artistic Techniques: The Mastery of Oil Painting
Brushwork and Layering: Creating Depth and Emotion
Burne-Jones's brushwork in "The Beguiling of Merlin" showcases his skill in layering oil paints to create depth and emotion. He used fine, delicate strokes to render the intricate details of the characters' expressions and clothing. This technique adds a sense of realism and intimacy to the scene, allowing viewers to connect with the characters on a personal level. The layering also contributes to the painting's luminous quality, enhancing its ethereal beauty.Light and Shadow: Enhancing the Mystique of the Scene
The interplay of light and shadow in the painting adds to its mystique. Burne-Jones skillfully uses chiaroscuro to create a dramatic contrast between the illuminated figures and the darker background. This technique not only highlights the characters but also evokes a sense of intrigue and tension. The soft glow surrounding Vivien enhances her enchanting presence, while the shadows enveloping Merlin suggest his vulnerability and the impending danger of his situation. The Cultural Impact of The Beguiling of Merlin
Reception and Critique: How the Painting Was Initially Viewed

Some critics praised Burne-Jones's innovative approach to storytelling through art, while others found the themes of seduction and betrayal controversial. Over time, however, the painting has gained recognition as a masterpiece of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, celebrated for its emotional depth and visual beauty. Today, it is regarded as a significant contribution to Victorian art and culture.Legacy: Influence on Modern Art and Literature

Thick, Supportive, and Cozy for Reading or Nursing
Size: Full, Color: Olive Green
This wedge pillow has been a great fit on my daughter’s bed. It’s super soft and cozy, and at the same time offers great support for sitting up in bed. The pillow is nice and thick, so you don’t sink into it — perfect for reading, studying, or lounging without needing multiple regular pillows.
I tried it out myself and was surprised at how well it also works as support while nursing an infant. It props you up at just the right angle and feels stable without shifting around.
The removable, washable cover is a big plus, and the olive green color is subtle yet stylish. I’m impressed enough that I’ll either be purchasing one for myself soon or adding it to my Christmas list.

Buttons
Size: King, Color: Dark Grey
Here's what I like:
Appearance. I like the color and how it looks on my bed. It looks appropriate for a king sized bed.
Removable cover. It was easy to take the cover off and wash, which I appreciate because I like my bedding to smell fresh and clean.
What I don't like:
It is a bit softer than I would like. But I can live with it. I thought it was a foam pillow inside, not fill. Maybe my fault though for not reading description or reviews.
Quality. This is the biggest issue driving the rating. I removed the over upon opening the item so I could wash it. The buttons are attached the the inside cover. When removing the outside cover, you have to unbotton them. They are not secured well at all. From what I can tell the threading goes through the inside cover through the fill to the button on the opposite side. I suspect this because 4 buttons came off when I removed the outside cover. They are very loosely secured to each other. Be gentle when removing and replacing the cover. Now I will have to thread the buttons again and secure it. Just a pain for a brand new item.
Should I expect that for the cost of the item? I dunno. Could have been a higher rating, but, damn those buttons.

Great Pillow! Could use some improvements
We really like this pillow! It is a good firmness, and helps fill the gap that is often between our headboard and mattress.
Only complain is that almost all of the buttons have fallen off. We have had this for about 2 months.
You also can’t take the cover off of it to clean, which would be a nice feature.

Pretty, but very practical.
Size: Full, Color: Mint Green
The color was exactly what I expected from the photo. It arrived in an unbelievably small package, but expanded quickly once I opened the bag. I waited the recommended 24 hours to be sure it was done. I am pleased that the length is a perfect fit, and I like that it comes up to the back of my neck when I'm sitting in bed. It is a bit softer than I originally imagined, but not so soft that I feel like I'm sinking through it. It's very pleasantly supportive. The fabric is like a soft ribbed corduroy with piping along the outer seam. It looks nice. Both ends have a pocket that is barely noticeable, but is the perfect size to keep your phone close by. I'm temporarily homebound and spending a lot of time sitting in bed, so I'm very glad I invested in this pillow for comfort and convenience. If you ever have trouble with pillows working their way under the edge of the headboard, and into the dusty space between the headboard and the wall, consider this problem solved.
