Contextualizing the 17th Century Dutch Art Scene

The Role of Guilds in Dutch Society

In 17th century Holland, guilds played a crucial role in the social and economic fabric of cities like Haarlem. These organizations regulated trades, maintained quality standards, and provided a support network for artisans. The Guild of St Luke, specifically, was dedicated to artists and craftsmen, fostering a vibrant community of painters, sculptors, and architects. This guild not only influenced artistic practices but also shaped the cultural identity of Haarlem, making it a hub for artistic innovation.

Artistic Patronage and the Rise of Portraiture

The flourishing economy of the Dutch Golden Age led to increased patronage of the arts. Wealthy merchants and influential citizens commissioned portraits to showcase their status and power. This trend gave rise to a new genre of portraiture that emphasized realism and individuality. Jan de Bray's work, including The Governors of the Guild of St Luke, exemplifies this shift, capturing the essence of his subjects with remarkable detail and character.

Jan de Bray: A Master of Portraiture and Narrative

Biographical Insights into Jan de Bray

Early Life and Artistic Development

Jan de Bray was born in 1627 in Haarlem, a city renowned for its artistic heritage. He trained under the guidance of his father, a painter, and quickly developed a unique style that combined realism with narrative depth. De Bray's early exposure to the works of masters like Frans Hals and Rembrandt influenced his approach to portraiture, allowing him to capture the personality and social status of his subjects.

Influences and Techniques in De Bray's Work

De Bray's artistic journey was marked by a blend of influences, including the naturalism of the Northern Renaissance and the dramatic lighting of Baroque art. His meticulous attention to detail and innovative use of color set him apart from his contemporaries. He often employed a technique known as chiaroscuro, which enhanced the three-dimensionality of his figures, making them appear lifelike and engaging.

Do not buy, I recommend looking for something else
Size: King (Pack of 2), Style: Medium, Configuration: Hometextile
I don't like the quality of those pillows. They don't have any support, super flat, it's like just using the pillow sheet without the pillow. I honestly don't get why this could even be a product. Amazon Basics brand is veryh nice but this one was a very bad one. I usually go with anything but this was worst than cheap airbnb pillows.

Great
Size: King (Pack of 2), Style: Medium, Configuration: Hometextile
The medium density support is exactly as advertised and provides more support and firmness. The pillow is taller because of the density so maybe not great for stomach sleepers but works well for back and side sleeping. I bought this because I tried the same pillow at my sister’s house and woke up without neck pain for the first time in forever. Honestly better than my $100 pillow.

These are firm pillows not medium as described.
Size: King (Pack of 2), Style: Medium, Configuration: Hometextile
These pillows are much too firm to be medium density as described. They are too stuffed full of filling. They barely give when my head is on them, so my neck ends up twisted. And they are ridiculously heavy. The filling is also uneven. I wish there was a zero stars option. Definitely returning them.

Medium Density is flat and underfilled, soft is better. Get medium if you hate life or for in-laws
Size: King (Pack of 2), Style: Medium, Configuration: Hometextile
I thought the medium density version would be a firmer version of the soft version but I was very wrong. The medium version is very flat and has no support. Medium density feels like a cheapo $2 black friday pillow that's only useful as a decoration. I suppose the medium density fill version does have its use, you can get this pillow for a guest bed. Perfect for the in laws/guests you dislike so they don't get too comfortable and overstay their welcome. The soft one is very filled and nice to sleep on. The soft one feels firmer than the medium version, probably due to the fact that its probably filled twice as much as the medium density. Would recommend to get the soft density fill version of this pillow.
