COURSE OVERVIEW:

Welcome to the Social & Emotional Development in Children course. This program will equip you with the foundational knowledge, developmental psychology insights, and practical support strategies required to foster children’s social, emotional, moral, and spiritual growth. You will explore how early attachment shapes later relationships, how identity and self-esteem develop, how children learn social and emotional skills, and how supportive adults can promote resilience, emotional literacy, and positive behaviour. This course also examines how to respond to distress, support diversity, manage conflict, and create nurturing environments for children from a wide range of backgrounds.

This course begins by examining the importance of children’s social and emotional development and how educators and caregivers can support children’s personal and social growth. You will explore the relationship between early attachment and later relationships, how much early experience matters, and why attachment is a critical foundation for future wellbeing. This section also covers the development of early attachment, attachment patterns in childhood, and situations in which attachment may be difficult. You will examine how children develop as individuals, the personal development of children, the sources of personal identity, and how children learn about culture and faith. This section concludes with how to support children’s identity and self-esteem, the development of children’s self-esteem, what temperament is, and how temperament influences behaviour.

The next learning area focuses on children’s social skills and relationships. You will explore the development of friendships, social contact across age groups, and how adults can help children manage social interactions effectively. This section examines the importance of social skills in play, practical steps in conflict resolution with children, and how to support diversity in children’s friendships. You will explore how varied peer interactions help children appreciate differences, practise empathy, and build confidence in group settings.

A further learning area highlights emotional development and emotional literacy. You will explore the importance of children’s emotional development, the development of children’s emotions, and how children learn about emotions through modelling, language, and social experiences. This section examines how to promote emotional literacy, how to support children’s understanding of other people’s feelings, and how to use persona dolls as a tool for emotional and social learning. You will also explore how to promote a sense of security for children, when children may need extra support, and the importance of nurture groups in strengthening emotional resilience.

Another learning area focuses on supporting children through stress and adversity. You will explore how to help children in distress, the impact of family crises on development, and how to listen and provide supportive conversations that validate children’s feelings. This section covers the importance of circle time as a space for guided group discussions, how to support children’s behaviour, the long-term effects of stress on children, and the consequences of children being weighed down by emotional burdens. You will explore neighbourhood and domestic violence, how to support children from refugee families, and how safety, predictability, and emotionally present adults help children recover from traumatic experiences.

The next learning area examines moral and spiritual development. You will explore how to support children’s moral development, how children understand moral issues and dilemmas, and how to teach ground rules and consequences with clarity and fairness. This section highlights the importance of supportive adults in modelling moral behaviour, how to support children’s spiritual development, and how to support their religious faith respectfully and inclusively. You will also explore good practice in early childhood settings, anti-discriminatory practice, and how children learn within spiritual development. This section concludes with how to support children in developing a sense of wonder through exploration, curiosity, and reflective experiences.

By the end of this course you will be able to understand how social and emotional development unfolds, support children’s identity and self-esteem, promote empathy and emotional literacy, facilitate healthy friendships, respond to distress, guide behaviour positively, support moral and spiritual development, and create inclusive early childhood environments that nurture each child’s wellbeing and sense of belonging.

Aggressive chewer who loves fetch approved!!
Size: Medium, Size: Medium
I highly recommend the Chuck-It brand in general, especially for dogs with an aggressive bite. These balls are awesome and are the most durable balls I’ve bought for my 50 lbs lab mix. He has not been able to break one of them yet and we’ve had a few of the squeaky balls for months. They are a bit pricey but worth it. The one in the pic has been used for months, lives outside and you can see it’s still in great shape.

Good quality dog ball for playing fetch
Size: Medium
My dog and family love these chuck it balls to play fetch with our dog. They are durable and fun. They squeak which is added fun for any dog! Regular tennis balls my dog chews apart and they get pretty gross after playing and being left outside. These can be easily washed off and cleaned. These balls last! Would recommend to anyone with a dog and would purchase again.

Finally a ball my power chewers cannot destroy
Size: Medium
I have two dogs, an American Bully and an American Pit Bull Terrier, and both of them love to chew. Most balls last a very short time around here before they are shredded or missing big chunks. This one has actually held up. They chase it, tug on it and sit and chew on it, and it is still in one piece with no pieces breaking off. One of my favorite things is being able to put food inside. I add some kibble or small snacks, and they will happily sit and work on it for a long time. It keeps them busy, gives them something safe to chew, and they get a little reward while they play. When they are done, I just rinse it out and it is ready to go again. If you have strong jawed dogs that usually destroy toys, this ball is worth trying. Mine really enjoy it and I feel better knowing they finally have a ball that can keep up with them.
