Six Questions Your Mad Science Franchise Financial Model Must Answer

We built this franchise unit financial model using our own research into the children's enrichment sector and mobile service economics. Key assumptions like the $360,000 Year 1 revenue and $70,000 EBITDA are pre-populated with researched data and are fully editable to match your specific territory. This tool allows you to stress-test the viability of school contracts and birthday party revenue against fixed costs like modular space rent.

When will the unit turn a profit?

The unit shows immediate operational viability with a break-even date of January 2026, just one month after launch. By Year 5, EBITDA is projected to reach $463,000 as you scale from $360,000 in initial annual sales to over $1 million. Efficiency is the name of the game here.

Improve Profitability

  • Optimize instructor scheduling for workshops
  • Upsell premium kits at parties
  • Secure multi-year school contracts
[dynamic_pic9]

How much capital is required?

You will need approximately $265,000 in initial capital to cover the $25,000 franchise fee, $70,000 in leasehold improvements, and $50,000 for the lab setup. This total also accounts for mobile units and STEM equipment necessary to service both on-site workshops and school contracts. Having a clear view of these startup costs ensures you don't run out of steam before the first party.

Major Capital Uses

  • Leasehold Improvements: $70,000
  • Laboratory Setup: $50,000
  • Mobile Service Units: $45,000
[dynamic_pic10]

What is the return on investment?

This investment offers an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 3.75% and a Return on Equity (ROE) of 0.87 over the five-year period. You can expect a payback period of 4 years, which is standard for a service-based model with significant upfront equipment and build-out costs. It's a steady climb, but the cash flow maturity in later years is the real prize.

Investor Metrics

  • Internal Rate of Return: 3.75%
  • Payback Period: 4 Years
  • Year 5 Net Margin: 45%
[dynamic_pic11]

What is the break-even point?

The model hits the break-even point in month one, meaning revenue quickly covers the $4,100 in monthly fixed costs like rent and insurance. The biggest lever for staying above water is the volume of birthday parties, which starts at $110,000 annually and represents the highest-margin revenue stream. Watch your labor costs closely, as they are your biggest variable hurdle.

Break-Even Levers

  • Increase party booking frequency
  • Reduce science material waste
  • Minimize mobile unit fuel costs
[dynamic_pic12]

What is the cash runway?

The minimum cash balance is projected at $996,000 in December 2026, providing a massive safety net for operations. While the model shows a strong start, maintaining this runway requires disciplined spending on lab maintenance and keeping transportation costs around 2% of sales. Cash is king, especially when you're managing multiple mobile units.

Protect Cash Flow

  • Phase STEM equipment purchases
  • Negotiate modular space rent
  • Manage initial kit inventory
[dynamic_pic13]

How do different scenarios look?

Moving from a medium to a high-growth scenario involves scaling your instructor team from 2.0 to 4.0 full-time equivalents to handle increased demand. In the high case, revenue jumps from $360,000 to over $1 million by Year 5, significantly boosting your store-level margin. Success defintely depends on how well you execute local marketing to fill the workshop calendar.

Hit the High Case

  • Aggressive local social media ads
  • High instructor retention rates
  • Corporate sponsorship growth

Best Ball ever! Aussie is obsessed
Size: 6 Inch Diameter, Color: Orange
I will never buy any other ball!!!! I bought the 8 inch which my crazy Aussie liked. The 6 inch one he won't stop carrying it around. his face use to be so sad when he would pop other balls. This one deflates and fills back up instantly! He chases it and chews on it. We gone through a lot of balls, but this is going to be a staple in our house!

Great for crazy pups!
Size: 8 Inch Diameter, Color: Ocean Blue
Tough and fun! This is a great toy to keep in the yard for play. I have a heavy chewer. He can get a hold of it and carry it around but it doesn't pop. It is soft enough but also strong. My dog loves to herd it around. He loves it!

Durable, bouncy fetch toy that dogs usually love
Size: 8 Inch Diameter, Color: Ocean Blue
Bouncing Dog Toy is generally very well received, especially for dogs that enjoy fetch and active play. It is made from a flexible, puncture resistant material that can handle a lot of biting and chewing without immediately popping or losing shape. Many owners like that it has a good bounce and is easy for dogs to grip, even when wet or slobbery. It is also lightweight enough for kicking, tossing, or rolling, which makes it great for interactive play sessions. A big highlight is that it floats, so it works well for water play as well as backyard or park fetch. The 8 inch size is especially good for medium to large dogs because it is big enough to avoid accidental swallowing but still easy for them to carry and chase. Most complaints are pretty typical for any dog toy of this type, meaning very strong chewers can eventually damage it, and some dogs may puncture it over time, but even then it often keeps its shape and continues to be usable

Soccer ball just for dogs
Size: 6 Inch Diameter, Color: Ocean Blue
I could say "soccer", and our shoodle would wag her tail ready to play soccer with a tennis ball so I tried out this real soccer ball with her. Mostly, she just wants to wait for me to kick it, playing defense, so she can chase it like the tennis ball. After that she wants to usually bite it or roll over on top of it as a way to secure the ball, but sometimes she will have fun pushing it around with her nose or paws. She still prefers the frisbee for play time outside since the frisbee is good for catching and for playing tug-o-war, but this is a good alternative that always gets her wagging with excitement. I wanted to get a regular 6" soccer ball for our shoodle, but this was a good choice for dogs for the durability and safety of the rubber material. The hexagons give the dog some grip to pick it up. The rubber is soft enough to grip and expel air when they do figure out how to grip it. The ball is designed to suck back in air when the dog releases the ball. - Durable rubber material ideal for dogs - Dog can squeeze out air to grip it - Ball fills back up with air after air is squeezed out - Can make more noise than a leather soccer ball - Noise is still tolerable when used indoors

Good for aggressive cheers. Reinflates everytime even when punctured
Size: 6 Inch Diameter, Color: Apple Green
I have an aggressive cheer that will tear apart anything. I bought this a few months ago and it is covered in puncture holes but it reinflates everytime. Best dog toy ever she loves it. I would buy a dozen of these. The medium size is perfect for my mini bull terrier. Big enough to not get completely in her mouth but small enough that she can still grip it to carry it around
