On a cold wet, blustery day in February 2015 my friend and I walked around the east end of the island getting thoroughly soaked. As we approached the shelter of Par beach we noticed something in the water, initially we though it must be seal but we soon realised this was way too big! We knew this was a very special sighting, imagine seeing a whale right in the beach? But we had no idea just how significant a sighting this was until after we got home. I shared the damp pics I'd taken on my mobile on social media and they were soon picked up by the Cetacean Society in America and our lovely creature was identified as an arctic resident, the Bowhead whale. At the time this sighting was the most southerly ever, we felt so lucky to have seen this incredible mammal but sadly it should never have been this far south and it is an indicator of the dangers of climate change. I do hope this whale made it back in to more northerly waters.

The small whale is 22 mm long.
