Schloss Gobelsburg is in the Kamptal region of Austria, where it cultivates about 49 hectares of parcels using organic winegrowing. Eva and Michael Moosbrugger have overseen the winemaking since 1996. The history of viticulture here dates to the founding of the Zwettl monastery, in 1074; the monks were granted their first vineyards in 1171 (Heiligenstein and Gaisberg). The Moosbruggers are focused on making wines that express the individuality and character of Schloss Gobelsburg while reducing the use of machinery. To that end, they developed a system in which, rather than pumping, the wines are transported in barrels on wheels to the different sections of the cellar.

“Schlosskellerei” is sourced from young Riesling vines harvested from various estate sites, primarily Heiligenstein and Gaisberg. The soils include volcanic sandstone, mica slate, and alpine gravel. Fermentation and élevage are carried out in stainless steel.
 
This dry style of Riesling shows the variety’s characteristic fresh citrus notes of lemon and lime, with stone and tropical notes of peach and lychee as well. While it has ample fruit and body, the finish is long and dry, driven by crisp acidity. Pair it with seafood, cured meats, pork, and dishes with a range of spices— a delicious Riesling for any occasion! It’s a great one to try if you’re new to the dry Austrian style or want to introduce someone else to it and prove that not only is Riesling great, it’s also not all sweet.
