❃ Towering above the cold grasslands of Pleistocene Eurasia, Elasmotherium sibiricum was a true giant — standing over two metres at the shoulder, weighing as much as four tonnes, and carrying what may have been the longest horn of any mammal that ever lived. Estimates from the dome-like horn base on its skull suggest a keratin spike up to a metre and a half tall, jutting forward from the forehead like the horn of a unicorn. Many scholars now believe this very animal inspired the unicorn myths that spread westward through ancient Persia and into medieval Europe.
❃ Despite its monstrous size, Elasmotherium was a grazer. Its tall, ever-growing teeth were perfectly adapted for chewing tough, silica-rich grasses, and the long legs beneath its bulky body suggest it could cover ground quickly across open steppe. Fossils have been recovered from southern Russia, Kazakhstan, and as far east as Mongolia, where it shared its world with woolly mammoths, cave lions, and early modern humans.
❃ For decades, Elasmotherium was thought to have died out hundreds of thousands of years before our own species reached the steppe. Recent radiocarbon dating has rewritten that story dramatically — the species survived until at least 39,000 years ago, meaning early Homo sapiens almost certainly encountered it on the open plains of Central Asia.
