Emla Cream 5% 30g is a local anaesthetic cream that can be applied to the skin to suppress the pain of needle procedures. Its formula has been used successfully in GP surgeries and hospitals for years. Emla cream contains prilocaine and lidocaine, two ingredients that numb the skin. (The cream is left on the skin for at least 60 minutes to take effect). The result is one you'll love - less pain when you have a needle procedure.

Disclaimer: the manufacturer of Emla cream has directed that this product cannot be used for cosmetic and tattooing purposes. We are only able to supply this product for use with injections, blood samples and minor skin surgery. If you order this product for any other purpose your order will be rejected.

How does Emla Cream work?
Emla cream is a local anaesthetic that can be applied to the skin to help suppress the pain of needle procedures. When Emla cream is applied to the skin, the lidocaine and prilocaine prevent pain signals passing from that area to the brain and so numb the skin. This means otherwise painful procedures can be performed without causing pain.

What is Emla Cream used for?
Many of us are anxious about having vaccinations, mainly because of the pain of the injection. The cream can be used to temporarily numb the surface of the skin before procedures such as injections, taking blood samples and minor skin surgery.
You can apply Emla cream at home, prior to a needle involving procedure, to reduce pain and so make it less distressing for you or your child when visiting a doctor.
Emla cream can be used to temporarily numb the genital skin before surgical treatment of localised lesions, such as the removal of genital warts. In adult men it can also be used to numb the genital skin before injections of local anaesthetics into this area. A doctor or nurse must supervise the use of Emla when used on the genitals.
Why use Emla Cream?
If you hate needles you're not alone. Approximately 10% of people have a real aversion to needles. We're not sure why this happens, but the physical pain of the needle may create a psychological fear of needles in the future. Children can become affected and, if not addresses, this fear can become a problem in adulthood too. There are lots common reasons for needles to be used these days. These can include blood testing, blood donation, vaccinations and some minor cosmetic skin procedures.
So if you're looking for a less painful needle experience, Emla cream is a great way to help make sure that's what you get. Over 230 million people worldwide have been effectively treated with Emla and it has been used successfully by hospitals & G.P. practices in the UK since 1996.

Emla Cream 5% 30g instructions for application:
Make sure that the area of the skin to be anaesthetised is clean and dry. Shave the area prior to application if necessary. Squeeze half a 5g tube of Emla cream (about 2g) onto the procedure site, over an area the size of a 50p coin. For more specific instructions, depending on age, part of the body or procedures, usage timings may be as little as 10 minutes, see the pack leaflet.
Take one of the occlusive dressings and remove the centre cut-out piece. Peel the protective paper away from the underside. Cover the Emla cream with the dressing so that you get a thick layer underneath. Do not spread out the cream. Press down the edges firmly to avoid leakage.
Remove the paper frame. Write the time of application onto the dressing. Emla must be applied at least one hour before the procedure and can be left in place for up to five hours for adults and four hours for children. The longer the cream stays on, the better the anaesthetic effect.

When ready for use, remove the dressing and wipe off excess cream with a tissue.
Please make sure an appropriate occlusive dressing is used to cover the skin to maximise the absorption, and leave on the skin surface for adequate time (usually 60 minutes) ahead of the needle procedure. You can also ask your pharmacist to advise you on how much to use and where to apply. Please ensure the needle procedure is performed within the following four hours, but preferably as soon as possible after removal of the excess cream.

Emla Cream 5% 30g warnings:
Carefully follow the instructions supplied with the cream.
Wash your hands after applying the cream, unless your hands are the area being treated.

Take care to avoid contact of Emla Cream with the eyes, as this could numb the eye and prevent its protective reflexes, resulting in irritation. If you accidentally get the cream in your eyes, rinse well with lukewarm water or saline solution and protect the eye until sensation returns.

Excellent resource for anyone hiking the PCT
Format: Paperback
I bought this for my brother who will be hiking the PCT for a second time this summer. He has read many books on the PCT and he said this book is an excellent resource for anyone thinking about or hiking, planning to return to, the PCT. Very easy to follow and everything you need to know as you plan your hike.

Has me feeling prepared
Format: Paperback
Gearing up to hike the first section of the PCT. I got this book, my hiking buddy got a different book that covers the entire trail. While talking about our hiking plans he often says “my book didn’t mention that.” It’s clear this book is more detailed and up to date. I’m feeling very prepared and in the know about what to expect on the PCT.

The Best of the Modern Guides to the PCT.
Format: Paperback
This book is not an update of the Wilderness Press classics on which the trail was discovered and hiked by a couple generations from the 1970s to around 2010. It does however owe those books a heavy and unacknowledged debt. This is most notable in lettering sections which the author of this guide, Shawnte Salabert, attributes to the PCTA but in fact come from scarified, Schaffer, et all who wrote the original guides to California, Oregon, and Washington. Even the definition of sweat constitutes the Southern California trail, comes from those guides. (It starts at the Mexican Border near Campo California and ends in Tuolumne Meadows, Yosemite.). But alas, those books are long out of print, in part because today’s hikers prefer light weight apps with minimal trail information as opposed to detailed descriptions of the physical geography and varied ecosystems of the trail. I’m not sure the lost knowledge has equaled the reduced weight but I’m a bit old school. And this book is as much a throwback to that kind of writing as it is a nod to recent demands of the hiking community. It does cover every mile of the route, suggest campsites along the way, and as much as possible provide an option for day and section hikes along the trail for just about anyone. The author provides good car descriptions to major trailheads for each section hike he recommends as well as available entry and exit options along the way. The writing is entertaining and the author has his own sense of humor that will become readily apparent as you read the text. Based on my experiences (and I’ve hiked 95% of the trail he describes at least once; sometimes multiple times) his mileage descriptions are accurate and you will easily be able to recognize the places he describes along the way. The book also features nice color photos and it’s availability in digital form will certainly please the gram counting hiker set. On the other hand, I miss seeing elevations along with miles at each major trail intersection, pass etc. Salabert does give total elevation gain and loss for each section of trail he describes but sometimes it’s nice to know just how much of a climb to expect. Ultimately, this book fulfills it’s purpose. You should want to hike the PCT after reading a few pages if you hadn’t already when you purchased the book. And if you are like many people with only a weekend or a few days to spare hiking the trail, this book will make planning short sections easier. It offers a lot. But it reminds me of an era when guidebooks offered even more.

Superb Guide in All Respects
Format: Paperback
An invaluable reference for anybody interested in section hiking the trail. I especially appreciate the coverage of water and campsites. It’s also a fun and beautiful read for any armchair adventurer. Salabert did an amazing job bringing together well-written text, data, maps, and beautiful photos to create a comprehensive guidebook. Deserves to do very well.
