WE ARE MUSIC! A Portrait of Jon Batiste

There is no musical artist more fitting than Jon Batiste to grace the 2022 Jazz Fest Poster. Nor any doubt that Terrance Osborne was the perfect visual artist to capture Batiste’s lightning.

Jon’s unique brilliance is showcased in the way he crafts an irresistible arc tying the roots that shaped him to the currents that propel us all. Words fail in the face of his pitch-perfect artistry. His latest music videos, I NEED YOU and FREEDOM, convey the kinetic joy at the center of his work. To watch them is to be dazzled by the beat of his heart.

Jon co-composed the score for the music-centric Pixar film Soul, which earned him an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA Film Award (all shared with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross). He’s garnered 14 Grammy nominations in all, 11 in 2021 alone - the most by any artist for the 64th Grammy Awards.

We first celebrated Jon on the 2017 Congo Square poster, documenting his accomplishments up ’til then. Read the blurb accompanying that poster for a glimpse of Jon’s formative history.

THE PRINT

Terrance Osborne brings superb draftsmanship and an expert colorist’s eye to this work. For 2022, he goes beyond capturing Jon’s fluid energy. He inhabits his subjects prior to lifting a brush, scattering nods to their history throughout each piece. Some examples: The number 11 above the doorway of the house on the left is the address of Jon’s childhood house, his lucky number, birth month and, oh yeah, his number of Grammy nominations this year.

The parade parallels Jon’s "love riots,” the second lines he spontaneously forms that bring a taste of New Orleans to other cities’ streets. The piano embodies his composing and leading his band, Stay Human. There’s a shout out to St. Augustine High School’s famous Marching 100 Purple Knights, tracing the inter-generational dialog that has enriched our culture since the birth of jazz - a heritage echoed by the Batiste family - as well as Jon’s attendance there before transferring to NOCCA. You’ll probably spot others.

Osborne adds a second line umbrella imprint adjacent to his signature on the Signed Edition in a salute to Jon’s cultural ambassadorship. The Remarque and C-Marque editions’ umbrella imprint are hand embellished by the artist and the print is signed by Jon. The C-Marque is further overpainted by Osborne. These significant works provide unique opportunities to acquire an original Osborne at extremely favorable prices. All prints are subject to prior sale. If history is any guide, these editions will sell out before the Festival concludes.

Osborne’s portrait captures in a single slice of history the broad narrative sweep of a multi-faceted talent. The generosity of their twinned spirits is tangible in the two artists collaboration and the mutual inspiration evident in this wonderful print.

THE ARTIST

Terrance Osborne, a New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) alum like Jon, is inspired by the unique culture of his native city, leveraging the New Orleans street to reveal the motivating soul of his subjects. His work is well known to those familiar with this series, the most collected limited edition print in the world. His past contributions include the 2007 & 2010 Congo Square posters and the 2012, 2014 & 2018 Jazz Fest posters. Click on any of these to read more about him.

Horrible, don't buy
Size: 1.8in for Puppy Dogs
I wanted to love these. They had so much potential. It's a good size. It seems like a good shape. But ... 1) first red flag should have been the packaging. It looked like it was a dollar store item that had beenblost on the shelves for years. 2) the rubber is super flexible. I was expecting it to be sturdier. I can flatten the ball without lich force. Maybe that doesn't matter. Naybe flexible is good. But I never got a chance to test out it's durability against a pup because... 3) it smelled. I expected it to smell like rubber, like most rubber toys. Rubber smell is okay. Usually rubber smell goes away. But, this was NOT a rubber smell. It smells like peppermint or something similar. It's like someone sprayed essential oils when mixing the rubber and now the smell will not leave. I soaked it in dawn soap half the day and overnight. I rubbed. I scrubbed. The smell actually gets worst the more you scrub it!!! It's like a scented marker or scented eraser, but you do NOT want the scent in a dog toy! My dog cannot smell the food in it because the smell of the weird mint-like scent is so overpowering. He saw it had food, and wanted it, but every time he started sniffing wildly, he would recoil. Whoever thought it was a good idea to scent this was WRONG. Mint in the form of an essential oil is extremely poisonous to dogs!! So, why they would put a mint-loke scent ijto the dog's rubber treat toy is beyond me. I would return this if I hadn't throw out the package immediately. I considered pulling the package out of the trash once i realized the scent issue but other trash had already been dumped into the trash can over it and i didn't want to dig through trash. The ball is still soaking in soap. I scrubbed again this morning. I let obe dry out. No luck. It actually seems to get worst the more you scrub, like it really is embedded in the rubber itself. Yuck!!!

Excellent, unless your pup is a dedicated destructo-dog!
Color: Yellow and Orange
I purchased this twice for a young puppy. She loves these slippers, and they are quite resistent to her piranha teeth. The same can't be said for my adult Golden Retriever, who destroys almost every toy; it's one of his missions in life. A slipper accidently found its way to him, and he shredded it within about 45 minutes. I have to say that I'm surprised it lasted that long, attesting to its relative durability. Overall, I recommend these for most dogs.

Dangerous.
Color: Purple
Died in about 2 days. Dogs chewed it to bits and then tried to swallow the pieces. Would not recommend for pet safety. I don't have big dogs, I have littler puppies (3 and 5 months) - would likely have died instantly with big chewers.

Disappointed they didn’t hold up long before pieces was being chewed off.
Color: Yellow and Purple
My minature poodle loved them till she started chewing pieces off of them so we had to dispose of them.
