Spermidine is an organic chemical compound belonging to polyamines, occurs naturally in human body cells as well as plant and animal cells.

In spermidine foods found in cereal sprouts, in particular it can be found
in wheat and in apples, red grapefruits, grapes, broccoli, cauliflower, green salads, nuts, mushrooms, potatoes, very ripe blue cheeses, soy and soy products.

Currently, only spermidine derived from wheat germ extract is authorized by the European Commission to be placed on the European Union market as a novel food. The regulation authorizing the use of wheat germ extract (Triticum aestivum) rich in spermidine as a food ingredient specifies in detail the quality requirements for this extract, including: regarding the permissible limits of contaminants, it also describes the method of obtaining the extract.

An attempt to introduce food supplements with spermidine obtained from buckwheat seeds (a cheaper method of hydroponic cultivation in a solution with synthetic spermidine) led to a decision of the European Court of Justice (ECJ), which stated that spermidine obtained from buckwheat is a novel food and therefore it should go through the authorization procedure and obtain permission.
