❃ Browsing the open woodlands of Eurasia some thirty million years ago, Paraceratherium was the largest land mammal that ever lived. Standing over five metres at the shoulder and stretching nearly eight metres from nose to tail, it weighed an estimated fifteen to twenty tonnes — heavier than three modern bull elephants combined. Despite the scale, it was a true rhinoceros relative, hornless and long-necked, with a build closer to a giraffe than to any rhino alive today.
❃ Its long legs and elongated neck allowed it to reach high into the canopy, stripping leaves and soft branches from trees well beyond the grasp of any other mammal of its time. The skull was surprisingly small for the body, and the front teeth formed a pair of tusk-like incisors — used most likely to grip and tear vegetation rather than for defence. Fossils have been found across a vast range, from Pakistan and China to Kazakhstan and the Balkans, suggesting a wide-ranging herbivore that moved freely across the warm forests of early Oligocene Asia.
❃ Paraceratherium vanished around twenty-three million years ago, as global cooling shrank the lush woodlands it depended on and replaced them with drier, more open grasslands.
