About the work

Rana Begum has created a series of 20 unique works made from spray-painted aluminium foil to accompany the exhibition Is This Tomorrow?, 14 February – 12 May 2019. The series relates to her exhibited work with Marina Tabassum Architects, Phoenix Will Rise, 2019, of the same medium. The edition forms part of Begum's ongoing exploration into the process of making using various materials such as foil, paper and jesmonite.

In this series Begum moves away from a symmetrical grid by introducing a more organic geometry. Begum retains traces of the grid, achieved by hand-folding, but also incorporates a disruptive element by unfolding and scrunching the paper; an element of chance exists within the work.

For Begum, the work is influenced by both the urban environment and faceted landscapes. The array of reflective effects created when the surface is sprayed evokes a landscape that seems other worldly.

About the artist

Rana Begum (b. 1977, Bangladesh; lives in London, UK) blurs the boundaries between sculpture, painting and architecture. Her visual language draws from the urban landscape as well as geometric patterns from traditional Islamic art and architecture. Light is fundamental to her process. Her works absorb and reflect varied densities of light to produce an experience for the viewer that is both temporal and sensorial.

Solid Watch 2 Months In TLDR, would buy again
Color: Black/Black/Digital
Solid watch so far with a readable face and a comfortable strap. My previous watch was a G-shock DW5600. I chose this for the lap feature and generally liked the appearance. Things I didn’t love: 1) the chronograph displays the mode at the top. I know what mode it’s in, it would be better to have the actual time. 2) this has dual time zones, it’s apparently easy to flip to the second time zone without realizing. I have mine set to US eastern and US central (a one hour difference which begs the question why, and I hear you). But I almost missed 2 events not realizing my wristwatch had jumped back an hour while playing with my kids in the park. 3) I’m still playing with the count down timer function. I messed something up on my first run, but I’m sure I’ll figure it out. Just something didn’t work intuitively. 4) I didn’t realize how often I had used the indigo equivalent feature on my Gshock as a flash light in low light situations. With the black face this isn’t an option on this watch (I’d still make this trade for the aesthetic). I would buy again just for something fresh after 5+ years with the G-Shock and the lap feature. Probably a little hyper critical focused on the short comings. Water resistance has been tested an no issues after two months.

Tough as hel
Color: Black/Black/Digital
This watch hasn’t left my wrist in 5 months and has been through hell and back. Has all the features I’ll ever need. Bought a second one to keep in case they discontinue it in the future.

Amazing Quality & Price
Color: Black Band and Blue Face, Color: Black Band and Blue Face
Exactly as described. It looks absolutely stunning in person. It's very lightweight. Adjustable metal band with tool for ejecting the pins and band pieces. Movement around my wrist feels great and not pinching my arm hairs. Extremely easy to use and set up. Fits perfectly after making some minor adjustments on the band. Battery life promise of 10 years.
