This well-preserved specimen of Acanthochirana longiceps originates from the renowned Solnhofen Limestone of Eichstätt, Bavaria, Germany, one of the world's most important fossil localities. Dating to the Late Jurassic, approximately 150 million years ago, the fossil preserves all nineteen body segments with exceptional clarity, reflecting the remarkable preservation qualities for which the Solnhofen deposits are celebrated.
The specimen is presented on its original limestone matrix, where a natural fault line infilled with calcite provides subtle visual contrast while recording part of the specimen's geological history. Careful preparation has revealed fine anatomical detail while preserving the integrity of the surrounding stone.
The Solnhofen Limestone (Altmühltal Formation) is a world-renowned Konservat-Lagerstätte, famous for producing some of the most important fossils ever discovered, including Archaeopteryx. Its fine-grained sediments and unique depositional environment allowed for the extraordinary preservation of Jurassic life, making specimens from the formation highly regarded by collectors and institutions alike.
