• Tsavorite is actually a Green Grossularite Garnet. It is a Calcium Aluminum Silicate (like its sister stone, Tanzanite). ts intense green hues are caused by the presence of Vanadium and sometimes Chromium.
• Tsavorite was originally discovered in Tsavo National Park, Kenya in 1967 and was introduced to the gem trade in the 1970's. Tiffany's Henry Platt coined the name Tsavorite in 1974.
• There are currently a number of Tsavorite mines in East Africa. The majority of deposits contain Tsavorite colored by Vanadium. However, one deposit, in a place called Kuranze, also contains Chromium. This gives the stones from this deposit exceptional color, often with a trace of blue in the green like the finest Muzo Columbian Emerald.
• The gemstone Garnet is the official birthstone for January and is also the stone for the Zodiac sign Aquarius.
  
• The name Garnet comes from the Latin word "granatus", which means grain, because many garnet deposits are small grains of red crystals in their host rock. Garnet refers to a group of minerals that can appear in many colors.
  Some of the main Garnet types are: Rhodolite – purple; Hessonite – brown/orange; Spessartite – red; Mandarine – orange; Demantoid – light green; and Tsavorite – dark green.
