Unable to settle the dispute themselves, they sought the judgment of Paris, a Trojan prince. Each goddess tried to bribe Paris: Hera offered power, Athena offered wisdom, and Aphrodite offered the most beautiful woman in the world, Helen of Sparta (later known as Helen of Troy). Paris chose Aphrodite as the fairest, which set off a chain of events leading to the abduction of Helen by Paris, igniting the Trojan War. The golden apple became a symbol of discord and the catalyst for the conflict that shaped the destiny of Troy and Greece
