About the Artwork:

A Glimpse into 19th-Century Burma Through the Lens of Phillip Klier. This striking photograph, taken by the renowned German-born photographer Phillip Klier, offers a rare and intimate look into Burmese society during the late 19th century. Klier, known for his meticulous attention to detail and masterful composition, specialized in capturing the people, landscapes, and culture of colonial Burma (now Myanmar). His work, often published and admired in Europe, provided an invaluable visual record of Burmese life under British rule.

In this particular image, a young Burmese woman is seen elegantly smoking a traditional cheroot cigar, a cultural staple enjoyed by both men and women of the time. The subject sits with natural poise, her gaze calm yet confident, as Klier skillfully frames her within a simple yet evocative composition. His expert use of soft lighting enhances the delicate textures of her attire and facial features, lending a sense of realism and warmth to the image.

Dressed in traditional Burmese clothing, she wears a finely woven htamein—a long wrap-around skirt—paired with a fitted blouse, embodying the grace and sophistication of Burmese women in the 1890s. Her neatly styled hair, possibly adorned with subtle embellishments, further reflects the cultural aesthetics of the period. The cheroot she holds, thick and handmade, serves as both a personal and cultural emblem, illustrating a common social custom of the era.

Klier’s photography is not just about visual representation but storytelling. Through his lens, he documented a world in transition, balancing the enduring traditions of Burmese society with the subtle influences of colonial modernity. His images, such as this one, stand as timeless artifacts, preserving the everyday moments of a bygone era with remarkable clarity and artistry.

A great collection, but fails to cast Black Panther as a superhero
There are some great things about this collection of stories: women are well represented in lead roles; backstories for Miles Morales, Steve Rogers, Carol Danvers, and Tony Stark; stories that incorporate Black men as role models; and the important role technology plays in many of the stories. Now for our big disappointment. The Black Panther story is not about T'Challa becoming Black Panther, but more about Spider Man fighting Kraven, and once disarmed, Black Panther making him, "pay for the crimes [he has] committed against the animal kingdom," by delivering "the final blow." This did not sound like superhero/ role model behavior to us. I also found it strange that all the background characters in this story were white. That is not the New York city I know. The stories included are: - Miles Morales as the black spider man - Gamora vs. Nebula - Steve Rogers becoming Captain America - Spider-Man finding his place among heroes - Black Widow and Hawkeye - Carol Danvers becoming Captain Marvel - Rocket, Groot and technology - Captain America vs. M.O.D.O.K. - Tony Stark becoming Captain America - Spider-Man and Black Panther vs Kraven - Drax, girlfriend Kaz, and Star-Lord - Captain America and Iron Man seek help of Captain Marvel Overall, my son enjoys reading these stories and looking at the pictures. Though we will need to continue our search for a good Black Panther story, we are glad we bought this collection of stories, with the Miles Morales becoming Spider-Man story my son's new favorite.

Definitely for a Baby
This little Pooh is as described and definitely for a baby. I had hoped to gift it to an adult but upon receipt, I realized while it is a lovely gift for a baby, it would not relate well for an adult. The ears crunch and there is a sweet rattle inside. It’s very soft and a baby would find it comforting.
