About the work

Elmgreen & Dragset have created Single Leaves, 2018, a series of unique works to accompany the large-scale installation at Whitechapel Gallery, The Whitechapel Pool, 2018. Each unique work from the series takes a real leaf, galvanised in bronze and hand-painted or lacquered, from the bottom of the derelict swimming pool. The Whitechapel Pool, which is accompanied by a fictional narrative about once being a prosperous public amenity, now a closed and deteriorating architectural space, expresses nostalgia for the past as well as criticality toward austerity measures and gentrification.

Juxtaposed against a clean white surface in a table-based frame, the leaf is removed from it's natural environment and positioned as a specimen to be studied. The leaves, some green and some changed to brown, become a symbol of transition and decay, much like the dilapidated pool where they were found.

About the artist

Michael Elmgreen (born 1961 in Copenhagen, Denmark) and Ingar Dragset (born 1969 in Trondheim, Norway) are based in Berlin and have worked together as an artist duo since 1995. Their beguiling spatial scenarios explore social and sexual politics and unveil the power structures embedded in the everyday.

A hit for Border Collies
Color: Blue
Our border collie loves this toy! Keeps him entertained and when he throws it down it doesn't break open. Going strong for a couple days so far.

Toy destroyed.
Color: Blue
Dog destroyed it the evening we received it. It was a cool toy, though. Too bad it didn’t last longer.

Best toy every
Color: Orange, Color: Orange
My husky loves it. It's one toy she's not been able to destroy yet. She plays without when she's outside in her lot and will play for an hr at a time. She loves it moves and bounces instead of just tossing it and letting her fetch. The battery life is really good. We charge it about twice a week. It's quiet, so she loves that. It's perfect size for her.

Our German Sheppard loves these
Size: Medium
These cost a bit more than tennis balls, but they are so much nicer and longer lasting. For starters, they stay cleaner than tennis balls because they’re smooth rubber. Dirt won’t build up on them and if anything does stick, like grass or soil, it falls off once the dog slobber dries. They’re also thick, so they don’t fall apart or blow out like a normal tennis ball does in our dog’s jaws after 30 seconds. Our GS chomps on these like crazy and the only damage they’ve suffered is a crack that developed from the edge of the hole, but the crack is growing very slowly and none of these balls have totally failed yet. The balls do whistle when thrown ant high speed and that may help a dog track and locate it, but I’m not sure. Our neighbors hear the whistling too so it’s far from silent. Lastly the orange ball is easy to locate out in our yard, but the dark blue practically disappears.
