Richard Sapper created this kettle inspired by a childhood remembrance, the poetic sound of boats' sirens at River Rhine: this is because the melody that accompanies the vapour outlet must be pleasant and not anxious like the whistle of boilers.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Richard Sapper (1932–2015) was a visionary industrial designer celebrated for his ability to blend technical ingenuity with artistic elegance. Born in Germany and later based in Milan, Sapper’s work was characterised by a fusion of German precision and Italian flair, creating designs that are both highly functional and aesthetically striking.
Over his illustrious career, Sapper collaborated with some of the world’s leading brands, including Alessi, Kartell, and IBM, crafting products that remain iconic to this day. From the groundbreaking Tizio desk lamp—a marvel of engineering and minimalism—to the Alessi 9091 kettle with its signature melodic whistle, Sapper’s designs redefined modern living by merging practicality with poetry.
A recipient of numerous awards, including ten Compasso d’Oro prizes, Sapper’s legacy is a testament to his philosophy: design should not only solve problems but also spark joy and inspire wonder.
