The Artistic Vision of George Frederick Watts
Watts' Unique Approach to Biblical Narratives
George Frederick Watts, a prominent Victorian painter, masterfully captures the essence of biblical stories in his artwork. In "Adam and Eve before the Temptation," he presents a profound interpretation of the original sin. Watts emphasizes the emotional depth of the characters, inviting viewers to reflect on the themes of innocence and moral choice. His approach transcends mere illustration, transforming the narrative into a powerful visual experience.Influence of Pre-Raphaelite Aesthetics
Watts was influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, known for their vivid colors and intricate details. This influence is evident in his meticulous attention to the natural world surrounding Adam and Eve. The lush foliage and vibrant flora enhance the painting's emotional impact, creating a rich backdrop that contrasts with the impending temptation. The Pre-Raphaelite emphasis on realism and symbolism adds layers of meaning to Watts' work.Understanding the Historical Context of the Painting
The Victorian Era and Its Impact on Art
The Victorian Era was a time of great change, marked by industrialization and shifting social values. Artists like Watts responded to these changes by exploring deeper themes in their work. "Adam and Eve before the Temptation" reflects the era's fascination with morality, spirituality, and the human condition. Watts' painting serves as a commentary on the struggles between innocence and experience, a theme that resonated with contemporary audiences.Religious Themes in 19th Century Art
During the 19th century, religious themes were prevalent in art, often reflecting societal values and beliefs. Watts' portrayal of Adam and Eve taps into the rich tradition of biblical storytelling. His work invites viewers to consider the moral implications of the story, encouraging a dialogue about faith, temptation, and redemption. This painting stands as a testament to the enduring power of religious narratives in art.Watts' Role in the Symbolist Movement
Watts was a key figure in the Symbolist movement, which sought to express ideas and emotions through symbolic imagery. "Adam and Eve before the Temptation" embodies this approach, using visual metaphors to convey complex themes. The serpent, a symbol of temptation, looms large in the composition, representing the internal struggle faced by humanity. Watts' ability to weave symbolism into his work elevates the painting beyond a simple retelling of a biblical story.Detailed Analysis of the Composition and Color Palette
Visual Elements: Light, Shadow, and Color
Watts skillfully employs light and shadow to create a dramatic atmosphere in "Adam and Eve before the Temptation." The interplay of light highlights the figures of Adam and Eve, drawing attention to their expressions and body language. This technique enhances the emotional weight of the scene, inviting viewers to engage with the characters' inner turmoil. The Use of Earthy Tones and Their Significance
The earthy tones in the painting evoke a sense of naturalism and grounding. Watts uses a palette of greens, browns, and soft yellows to create a harmonious environment. These colors symbolize the beauty of creation, contrasting with the darker themes of temptation and sin. The choice of colors reflects the duality of paradise and the impending fall from grace.Contrast Between Adam and Eve: A Study in Color
In "Adam and Eve before the Temptation," Watts contrasts the figures of Adam and Eve through color and posture. Adam, depicted in warmer tones, embodies strength and resolve. In contrast, Eve's cooler hues suggest vulnerability and curiosity. This visual distinction highlights their differing responses to temptation, emphasizing the complexity of their characters. The Characters: Adam and Eve in Watts' Interpretation

The facial expressions of Adam and Eve are central to the painting's emotional impact. Adam's furrowed brow suggests contemplation, while Eve's wide eyes reveal her intrigue. Their body language further enhances the narrative, with Eve leaning toward the serpent, symbolizing her susceptibility to temptation. This dynamic interaction creates a palpable tension that draws viewers into the scene.Symbolic Representation of the Serpent
The serpent in Watts' painting serves as a powerful symbol of temptation and deceit. Its sinuous form and watchful gaze create an ominous presence, foreshadowing the impending fall. The serpent's placement within the composition emphasizes its role as a catalyst for the narrative, challenging the innocence of Adam and Eve. Great Dividers
Size: 6 Panel-120"W, Color: Beige
Love these!! Many uses. Simple, nice looking, sturdy overall. Well made.
Bought to divide the unsightly storage area from the calm rest area in the basement.
Also, these worked well for our garage party where the dividers let light and air in, though blocked the view of our party area from the cars driving by.

Just what I needed
Size: 4 Panel-136"W, Color: Black
I have a one bedroom apt and my son stays with me half the time. He has an air mattress in the living room until I can afford a 2 bedroom. But he’s in his early teens and needs privacy. I bought this after looking online at may of these. I’m so glad I went with this one. It covers his air mattress 3/4 of the way around and now he has his own little nook. I also gave him some led lamps and he might it like his own little nightclub. He LOVES it. And now he’s excited to be in his space. The quality is so good and there’s no see through, no gaps, it’s perfect.

Instructions could be clearer, but assembles well and is sturdy
Size: 3 Panel-102"W, Color: Black
The only reason for the lack of a star is the iffy instructions. There are a few different washers and the instructions could make the difference a LOT easier to understand and thereby reduce the need to re-do things. Other than that, the panels were easy to assemble and the parts fit well together. I was able to disassemble the screens and store them for a future use, which is nice. One caution - the feet that make the panels stand up will likely be a trip hazard, so be sure to plan the location for this device carefully.

Awesome product!!!
Size: 3 Panel-102"W, Color: Beige, Size: 3 Panel-102"W, Color: Beige
This thing is really awesome. I actually bought 2 of them and made myself a nice little enclosure to keep out any peeping Toms while I’m trying to work on my summer tan. What I was looking for is FULL privacy and this DEFINITELY provides that. Fabric is completely opaque, you cannot see anything through it which is exactly what I needed. Another huge bonus is the strips of fabric to cover the spaces in between the panels, giving TRUE privacy. This is a really well-made product, great design, great structure, and pretty easy to put together overall. The only downside is that with strong gusts of wind, it wants to tip over so as you can see I secured the bottom feet with a couple bricks to make it stable and that did the trick. But to me that is a minor inconvenience given all its other great aspects. So many other privacy dividers were still see-through… totally defeating the purpose. But this one is absolutely full privacy and PERFECT for what I needed it for!!!
