Klipsch SLM-5400-C In-Ceiling Speaker at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The SLM-5400-C is a shallow-depth 4" two-way in-ceiling speaker from Klipsch (Indianapolis, Indiana, USA), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Part of the Klipsch Reference 5000 architectural series and the SLM (Shallow Depth) lineup, it is engineered specifically for installations where standard ceiling depth is unavailable. At just 50 mm (approximately 2 inches) of mounting depth with a fully enclosed fire-rated galvanized metal back box included, the SLM-5400-C installs in ceiling cavities that would be physically impossible for conventional in-ceiling speakers. It combines a 4" Cerametallic woofer and a 1" Titanium Dome Tweeter with a custom Tractrix Horn, delivering a frequency response of 90 Hz to 20 kHz at 91 dB sensitivity. For homes with I-joists, concrete slab ceilings, dropped ceilings with minimal plenum space, or thinly constructed multi-story buildings, the SLM-5400-C is the premium architectural audio solution available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto and across Canada.

Big Sound, Slim Package: The 50mm Shallow-Depth Advantage

The SLM-5400-C's defining characteristic is its 50 mm total enclosure depth, achieved through a purpose-designed ported ABS baffle paired with an ultra-slim galvanized metal back box. Standard residential in-ceiling speakers typically require between 100 mm and 170 mm of ceiling cavity depth to accommodate their enclosure and driver assembly. The SLM-5400-C requires just 50 mm, making it suitable for engineered lumber I-joist construction where the floor system reduces available plenum height, concrete or composite decking in commercial-to-residential conversions, drop ceilings with minimal gap between the tile grid and the structural floor above, and any room where a conventional in-ceiling speaker physically cannot be installed. Klipsch achieves this minimal depth by mounting the entire driver assembly in a shallow ported ABS baffle and enclosing it in a fire-rated metal back box that is included with every unit, giving the SLM-5400-C a built-in acoustic enclosure without requiring any additional ceiling cavity volume.

Fire-Rated Galvanized Metal Back Box with Ported Acoustic Design

The ultra-slim galvanized metal back box included with every SLM-5400-C provides several critical performance and safety functions simultaneously. As a fully enclosed acoustic enclosure, it isolates the rear of the 4" Cerametallic woofer from the ceiling cavity, ensuring consistent bass loading and low-frequency response regardless of the volume or acoustic properties of the space above the ceiling. The ported ABS baffle extends low-frequency output below what a sealed enclosure of the same depth could achieve, producing usable bass down to 90 Hz from a driver configuration that occupies only 50 mm of depth. The galvanized steel construction is fire-rated, meeting the enclosure requirements for installations in wall and ceiling cavities subject to building code fire resistance requirements across Canada and in multi-dwelling residential construction. This built-in, fire-rated enclosure eliminates the need for a separately purchased back box that most standard in-ceiling speakers require for code compliance in these environments.

4" Cerametallic Woofer and 1" Titanium Dome Tweeter with Tractrix Horn

Despite its compact 4" woofer size and extreme shallow depth, the SLM-5400-C uses driver materials drawn from the Klipsch Reference 5000 architectural series. The 4" Cerametallic woofer uses a metal cone hard-anodized on both surfaces, producing a high stiffness-to-mass ratio that delivers tight, accurate bass and clear midrange reproduction despite the compact driver diameter. The 1" Titanium Dome Tweeter is mated to a custom-designed round Tractrix Horn that controls high-frequency dispersion and provides horn-loaded efficiency, delivering detailed, focused highs to 20 kHz. This combination of Cerametallic woofer, Titanium dome tweeter, and Tractrix Horn brings the acoustic quality level of the Reference 5000 architectural series into a speaker that is physically smaller than most alternatives designed for constrained installations, providing a meaningful performance advantage over compact in-ceiling speakers that use lower-grade cone materials and conventional dome tweeters without horn loading.

Key Features

  • 50 mm Shallow Mounting Depth with Included Fire-Rated Back Box: The entire speaker assembly, including its fully enclosed galvanized metal fire-rated back box, installs in just 50 mm of ceiling cavity depth. This is among the shallowest mounting profiles available in a quality two-way in-ceiling speaker, enabling installation in I-joist construction, concrete deck ceilings, drop ceilings, and thin-floor multi-story buildings where standard in-ceiling speakers cannot fit.
  • 4" Cerametallic Woofer: Hard-anodized metal cone from the Klipsch Reference 5000 architectural series delivers a high stiffness-to-mass ratio for tight, accurate bass and clean midrange, providing Reference-grade driver quality in a compact 4" format suited to the SLM-5400-C's shallow enclosure.
  • 1" Titanium Dome Tweeter with Custom Round Tractrix Horn: Titanium dome tweeter with Klipsch's Tractrix Horn geometry delivers focused, detailed high-frequency output to 20 kHz. Horn loading increases tweeter efficiency and controls dispersion, producing clearer high-frequency reproduction than an equivalent non-horn-loaded titanium dome tweeter in the same shallow enclosure format.
  • 91 dB Sensitivity, 120W Peak Power Handling: High efficiency enables adequate output from standard AV receivers and distributed audio amplifiers. The 120W peak power handling provides dynamic headroom well beyond the recommended 50W amplifier power, protecting the driver during transient peaks.
  • Ported ABS Baffle for Extended Low-Frequency Output: The ported baffle design extends bass output below what a sealed enclosure of the same minimal depth could achieve, maximizing low-frequency performance from the 4" Cerametallic woofer within the 50 mm depth constraint.
  • SlimTrim Flat Magnetic Grille, Round and Square Included: The flat minimum-bezel magnetic grille creates a modern, discreet appearance with minimal visual intrusion into the ceiling. Both round and square grille options are included in the box to match any ceiling design or interior aesthetic.
  • 8-Ohm Nominal Impedance, 12-Gauge Wire Compatible: Standard 8-ohm impedance ensures broad compatibility with all AV receivers, stereo amplifiers, and distributed audio systems. Wiring terminals accept up to 12-gauge speaker wire for low-resistance runs in larger installations.
  • Compatible with IK-650-C Install Kit: The optional IK-650-C installation kit (sold separately) is recommended for new construction rough-in, providing pre-wire brackets and marking aids for installation before drywall is applied.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Klipsch SLM-5400-C?

The Klipsch SLM-5400-C is a shallow-depth 4" two-way in-ceiling speaker from the Reference 5000 architectural series, featuring a 4" Cerametallic woofer, a 1" Titanium Dome Tweeter with a custom Tractrix Horn, 91 dB sensitivity, and 8-ohm impedance. It installs in just 50 mm (1.97 inches) of ceiling depth with a fully enclosed, fire-rated galvanized metal back box included, making it one of the shallowest in-ceiling speakers available for residential and commercial installation where standard ceiling cavity depth is unavailable.

Where is the Klipsch SLM-5400-C used when a standard in-ceiling speaker will not fit?

The Klipsch SLM-5400-C is specifically designed for installation scenarios where a standard in-ceiling speaker cannot fit. Common applications in Toronto and across Canada include engineered I-joist floor systems where the joist depth significantly reduces available plenum height, concrete or composite slab ceilings in converted commercial or industrial buildings, multi-story residential construction with thin floor assemblies between levels, drop-ceiling installations with a narrow gap between the tile grid and the structure above, and rooms where HVAC, plumbing, or electrical systems consume most of the ceiling cavity space. Any situation where the available depth above the ceiling surface is less than approximately 100 mm makes the SLM-5400-C's 50 mm profile the practical solution.

Does the Klipsch SLM-5400-C include a back box, and is it fire-rated?

Yes, the Klipsch SLM-5400-C includes an ultra-slim galvanized metal back box that is integral to the speaker assembly and ships with every unit. The galvanized steel construction is fire-rated, making it suitable for installations in wall and ceiling cavities subject to fire resistance requirements under Canadian and North American building codes. The enclosed back box also serves as the speaker's acoustic enclosure, isolating the rear of the 4" Cerametallic woofer from the ceiling cavity and providing the consistent acoustic loading required for accurate bass response. Unlike most standard in-ceiling speakers that require a separately purchased back box for fire-code compliance, the SLM-5400-C's back box is included in the box at no additional cost.

How does the Klipsch SLM-5400-C compare to the Sonance 4R or Polk Audio 65-RT for shallow-ceiling installations?

The Klipsch SLM-5400-C differentiates itself from the Sonance 4R and Polk Audio 65-RT in both driver materials and included enclosure. The SLM-5400-C uses a Cerametallic woofer and Titanium Dome Tweeter with Tractrix Horn from the Klipsch Reference 5000 architectural series, while the Sonance 4R uses conventional drivers without horn-loaded tweeter technology and the Polk Audio 65-RT does not offer a purpose-built shallow-depth format with an integrated fire-rated enclosure. The SLM-5400-C's included fire-rated galvanized metal back box eliminates the need for a separate enclosure purchase that Sonance and other manufacturers charge additionally for, and its 50 mm total depth is specifically engineered for the shallow-ceiling scenarios where both the Polk Audio and Sonance standard in-ceiling options cannot be installed at all.

What amplifier power does the Klipsch SLM-5400-C require?

The Klipsch SLM-5400-C is compatible with any standard AV receiver, stereo amplifier, or distributed multi-room amplifier rated for an 8-ohm load. Klipsch recommends 50W of amplifier power for typical use, and the 91 dB sensitivity means the speaker produces adequate output from modest power levels. The 120W peak power handling provides substantial dynamic headroom above the recommended amplifier power, protecting the speaker during loud transient passages in music and film. Standard multi-zone distributed audio amplifiers used in whole-home audio systems across Toronto and Canada are fully compatible with the SLM-5400-C without requiring any special high-power amplification.

Can the Klipsch SLM-5400-C be installed in a bathroom or kitchen ceiling?

The Klipsch SLM-5400-C is designed for standard indoor residential and commercial environments and is not rated for moisture-exposed or outdoor installation. For bathrooms, kitchens, or other high-humidity spaces in Toronto and across Canada, Klipsch's moisture-rated or outdoor architectural speaker models should be specified instead. However, the SLM-5400-C's included fire-rated metal back box makes it appropriate for installation above suspended ceiling tiles in commercial kitchens and restaurant dining areas where the ceiling plenum is shallow, provided the speaker itself is not directly exposed to steam, water spray, or condensation at the grille surface.

Where can I buy the Klipsch SLM-5400-C in Toronto or Canada?

The Klipsch SLM-5400-C is available at Vinyl Sound, an authorized Klipsch dealer in Toronto, Canada. Vinyl Sound carries the full Klipsch SLM Shallow Depth series and Reference 5000 architectural lineup and can assist with speaker selection, shallow-ceiling installation planning, and system design for whole-home audio projects throughout the Greater Toronto Area and across Canada.

Right from the start, I was drawn in by the prologue!!!
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
Queen of Roses (Blood of a Fae #1) by Briar Boleyn Genre General Fiction ( Adult), Romance, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Dark Romance “More primordial than the stars. My name was on his lips as he promised unspeakable darkness to any who came between us.” Right from the start, I was drawn in by the prologue!!! I’m a big fan of “touch her, and you die” vibes, but I mean, what’s also not to love about a unique Arthurian retelling with gender twists, a treacherous royal court, a dangerous quest, magical Fae & mystical monsters, entwined with a bit of spice! Morgan, Princess of Pendrath and true heir to the throne has spent most of her life dimming her light to feel safe and to make others comfortable. She is treated as an outcast in the court and repressed by her family due to the blood of the Fae within her and forced to join the Temple of the Three as a priestess in training to one day replace Merlin. Her brother, King Arthur, who reminds me of Joffrey from Game of Thrones, later tells her that he has other plans and offers her a choice of the Temple or to marry her off for political gain, unless… that is, she can journey through the great unknown and return with a long-lost fae weapon with enchanted powers known as Excalibur. Her quest begins with a roguish crew that includes the mysterious, arrogant, and heart-tuggingly handsome Captain of the Royal Guard, Kairos Draven, whom she can’t decide if she wants to stab or indulge in pleasure with. Along the way are plenty of surprises, mystical creatures, and betrayal, all while Morgan uncovers more of the truth about herself and who she can trust. This book had intriguing storylines and lovable characters that kept me turning pages and wanting more. I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds and comes together in book 2, Court of Claws, which I just started reading!! Read if you’re into- Dark Fantasy/Romance Slow–Burn Question Everything Magic and Action Fae Arthurian Legend Stabby/Broken FFC Morally Gray MMC Forced Proximity Queen of Roses is perfect for Holly Black, Jennifer L. Armentrout, and Sarah J. Maas fans. Please check the trigger warnings page in the table of contents before reading this book.

3.5 stars, A little boring to say the least.
Format: Kindle
Wow so I'm not sure where to begin on this one. This was a very different take on the legend of Arthur and Excalibur. This is told from the point of view of Morgan the sister of Arthur. Honestly the first 50% of this book is world building and character building which unfortunately was super boring for me. Morgan to me was a female MC that had a hard time in believing in herself. Sometimes taking too long to understand exactly what was going on around her. Draven was also a different male MC, like I couldn't put my finger on him and what he was all about. It was not until the last 10% of the book did we get some answers on the mystery that is Draven. The other 50% of the book centered around this big journey with everyone having a different motive. We see a spark of magic around this time that had me excited but then we never expanded upon that and what it could mean for the female MC. I feel like I want to read the second book just to see where this goes, but the spice was probably a 2 out of 5. Side characters are ok, Lancelet was fun but I almost felt like I wanted more.

A bewitching retelling of Arthurian legend!
Format: Kindle
In a land where the Fae have nearly become only a legend and those who still posses even a morsel of the blood are few and far between, Morgan finds herself cast aside by most of society due to her rumored half-Fae lineage, including her brother, King Arthur. With the kingdom at the brink of war, Arthur entrusts her with a quest to retrieve a Fae weapon of legendary power: the sword of Perun, Excalibur. Accompanied by men she loathes, Captain Kairos Draven and Ragnar Whitehorn, she embarks on her long and unbeknownst perilous journey, only to find that things she once believed to be myth are in fact very real. With devastating twists, omitted truths, witty banter and fierce action, Queen of Roses leaves you begging to know more about the secrets of Aercanum! Wow, wow, wow! Going into this story, I did not realize that it was going to be a retelling of Arthurian legend, especially not one with a fantastical twist! The unique spin almost gave me The Witcher vibes and I think adding Fae into the mix was quite interesting. I knew the basics of the legend but after reading this book, it has piqued my interest and makes me want to learn more about it. My attention was snatched as soon as I finished the prologue and I knew that I was going to devour this story. I truly enjoyed the gender swaps and even how Arthur was portrayed as villainous. Morgan’s past and even her parts of her present is absolutely heartbreaking, and I felt for her at times. I can only recall one other book that made me hate characters the way I despised Florian and Arthur, leaving me with my blood boiling and feeling disgusted. Even after finishing the book, Draven is still a mystery to me and I cannot figure out how to feel about him. I guess they just means that the author did an excellent job at conveying each character’s persona! The rich world building and imagery made it easy for me to visualize the places that the group visited along their journey. I am truly engulfed in this story and I cannot wait to see wait fate awaits Morgan and how the Fae will be even more incorporated in the next book!. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Enchanting
Format: Kindle
"Queen of Roses" by Briar Boleyn is a delightful and refreshing reimagining of the classic tale of King Arthur, with a captivating twist that places the spotlight on Morgan, a character who has often been overshadowed in traditional retellings. Boleyn's creative decision to shift the narrative perspective to Morgan breathes new life into the story, offering readers an intriguing and compelling look at the Arthurian world from an entirely different angle. One of the most commendable aspects of this book is its incorporation of Fae elements, which adds an enchanting layer of magic and mystery to the already familiar Arthurian setting. Boleyn skillfully weaves the world of the Fae into the narrative, creating a captivating backdrop against which the events of the story unfold. This addition not only adds depth to the world-building but also provides ample opportunities for twists and turns that keep readers thoroughly engrossed. However, while the book boasts numerous strengths, it does have one noticeable flaw: the characterization of Morgan. While it is reasonable to create a flawed and complex protagonist, it appears that at times, Morgan's character becomes overly difficult and hard to relate to. Her persistently negative perception of one of the main male characters, who is a potential love interest, despite his efforts to support and assist her, may come across as somewhat irrational and could test the patience of some readers. Striking a balance between a strong, independent character and one who can recognize genuine support and affection could have enhanced the overall reader experience. Nonetheless, the allure of "Queen of Roses" lies in its innovative approach to the Arthurian legend and its skillful blending of fantasy elements into a familiar narrative. Boleyn's evocative prose draws readers into a world where magic, destiny, and fate entwine, leaving us eager to uncover the mysteries that unfold within the pages. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
