Lignans are primarily recommended for dogs suffering from hyperadrenocorticism which is the over-production of adrenal hormones, primarily cortisol, and usually diagnosed as Cushing's Disease.

Lignan's Health Benefits for Dogs and Cats

Lignans are excellent for balancing hormone levels in the body. In females especially, they help balance estrogen levels; in males especially, they help balance the testosterone-DHT relationship and inhibit enzymes (such as 5α-reductase) needed to convert testosterone to DHT. This results in lower DHT levels, which may improve prostate health and excess-testosterone-related conditions.

Lignans also have anti-estrogenic effects and can prevent naturally occurring hormones from binding to estrogen receptors and exerting their negative effects. Lignans provide a weaker form of estrogen. Thus, they are believed to be helpful in balancing out both estrogen deficiencies (by supplying phytoestrogens to otherwise inactive receptors) and excesses (through at least two separate mechanisms – first, by competing with much stronger estrogen for the same receptors and second, by inhibiting aromatase activity).

Flax lignans have emerged as an important nutritional supplement because of their exceptionally high content of dietary fiber and phytoestrogens. The high amount of fiber in flaxseed lignans also helps support colon health. Lignans have indicated a variety of other benefits, such as heart health, cholesterol reduction, and hair health. Lignans also provide antioxidant protection and are believed to have a higher ORAC (antioxidant) value than any fruit or vegetable.

The recommended lignan dosage for dogs (either for cortisol reduction or for general health) is 1-2 mg per pound of body weight.

For  up to 10 lb dogs, give 10-20 mg of Flaxseed SDG lignans daily.
For 20 lb dogs, give 20-40 mg of Flaxseed SDG lignans daily.
For 40 lb dogs, give 40-80 mg of Flaxseed SDG lignans daily.
For 60 lb dogs, give 80-120 mg of Flaxseed SDG lignans daily
For 80 lb dogs, give 120-160 mg of Flaxseed SDG lignans daily

The capsules can be opened and sprinkled onto dog food. The capsules can also be placed in apple sauce, a piece of meat or cheese, etc.

Note: If your dog is taking flaxseed lignans, a probiotic like yogurt can help with absorption. Open the capsule and sprinkle the powder into a small amount of yogurt with live and active cultures.
