Yamaha YH-5000SE Flagship Planar Magnetic Headphones at Vinyl Sound Toronto Canada

The YH-5000SE is Yamaha's flagship open-back over-ear headphone (Kakegawa, Japan), available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada. Built around Yamaha's revived and fully re-engineered ORTHODYNAMIC planar magnetic driver, the YH-5000SE extends frequency response from 5Hz to 70kHz with a 34-ohm impedance and 98dB/mW sensitivity from a 320-gram magnesium body assembled by hand at Yamaha's Kakegawa factory, the same facility responsible for Yamaha's flagship grand pianos and top-tier audio components. Every element of the YH-5000SE, from its Japanese-made rolled plain Dutch weave stainless steel acoustic filter to its braided silver-coated OFC cables, sheepskin leather and Toray Ultrasuede earpads, and aerospace-grade triaxial mesh housing, represents Yamaha's uncompromised pursuit of True Sound at the absolute pinnacle of headphone engineering.

ORTHODYNAMIC Planar Magnetic Driver: Yamaha's Reinvented Legacy Technology

Yamaha's ORTHODYNAMIC driver technology first captivated audiophiles in the 1970s, beginning with the HP-1, and the YH-5000SE represents its most advanced evolution to date. The driver employs an ultra-lightweight thin-film diaphragm with a metal voice coil etched in a unique pattern on both sides of the film, combined with minute concentric circle corrugation for shape retention and pattern reinforcement for structural integrity. The central fixed structure found in conventional dynamic headphone drivers has been entirely eliminated, allowing the full diaphragm surface to move freely from its outer circumference without constraint. Micro-perforation air dampers with high permeability are arranged on both sides of the diaphragm to contain its motion accurately while preserving dynamic responsiveness. Magnetic substances in the immediate vicinity of the diaphragm have been avoided to minimize interference with the driver's magnetic field. The result is a planar magnetic driver of extraordinary responsiveness that conveys subtle performance nuances, detailed breath and articulation in vocals, and full low-frequency expression with both volume and transparency simultaneously.

Large Open-Back Housing and Japanese-Made Acoustic Filter

The YH-5000SE's large open-back housing provides ample internal acoustic volume that comfortably envelops the ear while creating ideal airflow conditions around the thin-film diaphragm, reducing mechanical loading on the driver and preventing sound reflections inside the rear cavity. Internal pressure regulation is managed by a newly developed rolled plain Dutch weave stainless steel filter of Japanese manufacture, produced under strict air permeability control to enable smooth, consistent air discharge. An arch-shaped protrusion arranged inside the housing acts as a directional reflector, contributing to precisely controlled sound from initial attack through final decay. The housing frame is constructed from magnesium, which has the highest vibration-damping rate among practical metals, keeping total assembled weight to 320 grams while maintaining exceptional structural rigidity. The open-back design is protected by a triaxial mesh material used in aerospace applications, providing a high-quality visual texture alongside its protective function.

Key Features

  • ORTHODYNAMIC Planar Magnetic Driver: Yamaha's fully re-engineered planar magnetic driver with ultra-lightweight thin-film diaphragm, eliminated central fixed structure, concentric corrugation for shape retention, and micro-perforation air dampers for precisely controlled, dynamically expressive sound across the full frequency range.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Yamaha YH-5000SE?

The Yamaha YH-5000SE is Yamaha's flagship open-back over-ear planar magnetic headphone, built around a fully re-engineered ORTHODYNAMIC driver with a 5Hz-70kHz frequency response, 34-ohm impedance, and 98dB/mW sensitivity, in a 320-gram magnesium body. It is hand-assembled at Yamaha's Kakegawa factory in Japan and includes braided silver-coated OFC balanced and unbalanced cables, two earpad types, and a machined aluminum and copper alloy stand. The YH-5000SE is available at Vinyl Sound in Toronto, Canada.

How does the Yamaha YH-5000SE compare to the Audeze LCD-X and HiFiMAN Arya?

The Yamaha YH-5000SE competes in the flagship open-back planar magnetic headphone tier alongside the Audeze LCD-X and HiFiMAN Arya. At 320 grams, the YH-5000SE is significantly lighter than the Audeze LCD-X, which weighs approximately 600 grams, making it considerably more comfortable for extended listening sessions. The HiFiMAN Arya Stealth is closer in weight at around 404 grams but lacks the YH-5000SE's dual-earpad system, inclusion of a balanced 4.4mm cable, and dedicated machined metal stand. The YH-5000SE's unique Japanese-made Dutch weave stainless steel acoustic filter and hand-assembly at Yamaha's flagship Kakegawa factory represent a manufacturing precision and quality control approach that has no direct equivalent among Audeze and HiFiMAN products at this tier. The YH-5000SE's 34-ohm impedance and 98dB/mW sensitivity also make it more accessible to portable amplifiers and balanced DAC/amp combinations than the typically higher-impedance Audeze designs.

Does the Yamaha YH-5000SE require a headphone amplifier?

The Yamaha YH-5000SE has a 34-ohm impedance and 98dB/mW sensitivity, which places it on the more accessible end of the planar magnetic headphone spectrum in terms of amplification requirements. It can be driven to moderate listening levels from a quality DAC/amp or high-output portable player, but its full dynamic capability and low-frequency expression are best realized through a dedicated headphone amplifier, particularly one with a balanced 4.4mm output to take advantage of the included balanced cable. A balanced connection reduces noise and crosstalk compared to single-ended operation and is recommended for critical listening.

What is the difference between the two included earpads?

The YH-5000SE includes two distinct earpad types that produce a slightly different sound character and wearing comfort. The leather version uses sheepskin at the face-contact surface for moderate moisture absorption and odor protection, combined with perforated synthetic leather on the outer periphery and ventilated mesh on the inner circumference, producing a more contoured, defined sound image with a clear sound field. The Toray Ultrasuede version uses a luxurious non-woven material with a suede texture, providing a softer, more enveloping fit and a warmer, more spacious sound character suited to longer listening sessions where comfort over hours of use is the priority.

What cables are included with the Yamaha YH-5000SE?

The YH-5000SE includes two detachable braided silver-coated OFC cables: a 3.5mm 3-pole unbalanced cable with a 6.3mm screw-on adaptor for connection to standard headphone outputs, and a 4.4mm 5-pole balanced cable for connection to balanced amplifier outputs. The silver-coated OFC core construction of both cables is optimized for clear midrange and high-frequency transmission with expressive low-frequency reproduction, and the precise braiding geometry avoids parallel alignment of independent signals to minimize crosstalk and maximize transmission purity.

Where can I buy the Yamaha YH-5000SE in Toronto or Canada?

The Yamaha YH-5000SE is available at Vinyl Sound, an authorized Yamaha dealer in Toronto, Canada. Given the hand-assembled, individually inspected nature of the YH-5000SE, purchasing from an authorized Canadian dealer ensures full Yamaha manufacturer warranty coverage and direct access to knowledgeable staff for product demonstration and pairing advice with compatible headphone amplifiers and DACs.

What makes the Yamaha Kakegawa factory significant for the YH-5000SE?

Can be effectively used as a working tool for the predictor (not just for investments)
Format: Hardcover
This is one of the best works on the declining economy and US, associated possible revolution/civil war and later major power war, that is presented in a clear, convincing and replicable way. Kudos to Dalio!! More importantly, the contents of the book can be used to predict upcoming events rather than just perceiving the world on fire with several likely upcoming breakouts (e.g., war with China over Taiwan, the likely loss of our reserve currency, the unsustainable and uncontrollable burgeoning national debt which grows by a trillion USD every 100 days). The author makes a valid case that significant events are moving very rapidly and, for the rest of the 2020s, things are going to get a whole lot worse for the non-elites in our society. Of note, the book was actually written in 2020, published the next year, which then allows the readership now in 2025 to verify the accuracy the observations and predictions. Right on target!

Great book for understanding how the world works!
Format: Hardcover, Format: Hardcover
Dalio has a unique perspective on the topic of the changing world order. He is a successful businessman who has spent his career analyzing economic trends and patterns, and this book is a culmination of his findings. His writing is clear and concise, making complex economic concepts easy to understand. One of the best features of the book is its organization. The book is broken down into 14 chapters, each focusing on a different aspect of the changing world order. Dalio starts with the big picture, examining the major forces driving the changing world order, before delving into the specifics of each major empire, including the Dutch, British, American, Chinese, Soviet, and Japanese empires. Ultimately, he brings everything full circle by discussing the changing world order today and what the future may hold. Another great aspect of the book is the way that Dalio weaves history and economics together. He doesn't just present economic theories in a vacuum; he uses real-world examples to show how they have played out over time. For example, in Chapter 5, he discusses the Great Depression and how it shaped the changing world order in the 1930s and 1940s. He also uses the rise of populism in Chapter 7 to illustrate how economic inequality can lead to political instability. Overall, I would highly recommend "The Changing World Order" to any intelligent human interested in economics, history, or politics. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the forces shaping our world today and what the future may hold. As Dalio himself puts it, "understanding how the world works is essential if you want to accomplish your goals and live a fulfilling life." Here are some key takeaways from the book: The changing world order is driven by three major forces: the changing relative powers of countries, the changing relative productivity of countries, and the changing values of countries. The rise and fall of empires is a natural part of the changing world order. Each empire has its own unique characteristics, but they all follow a similar pattern of rise, peak, and decline. The post-World War II order was built on the idea of free trade and cooperation between nations. However, this order is now under threat due to rising nationalism and protectionism. China is currently on the rise and is likely to become the world's dominant economic power in the coming decades. However, although this rise is not guaranteed, and there are many challenges that China will need to overcome, the US needs to step up its game on several fronts to compete. The future of the world order is uncertain, but there are a few things we can say with some degree of certainty. For example, the rise of automation and artificial intelligence is a hot topic today likely to have a major impact on the global economy in the coming years. Overall, "The Changing World Order" is a well-written and informative book that is sure to appeal to a wide range of readers. Whether you're a history buff, an economics nerd, or just someone who wants to better understand the world we live in, this book is well worth your time. As Dalio himself says, "The more you know, the more you'll understand, and the more you'll be able to make informed decisions about your own life." Five stars from me, give it a read!

10/10 Recommend
Format: Hardcover
I took Jeffrey Sachs's Globalization class on EDX Academy and somehow stumbled upon this book in between class and finding books around the subject. I watched his youtube video that generalizes the book and was blown away by how my current class I was taking aligned with it. This book is an easy read, and especially for those who aren't well-versed about world history and world economics. I will admit that I do love history, and am learning economics, so this book was a beautiful way merge all these timelines together. The book breaks down and summarizes key points in world history and economics to make points to get the message across each chapter. Font size is great! Might even be considered larger compared to other books. The only thing I wish this book provided was thicker paper in the physical book itself, especially for the hardcover version. If Ray Dahlio ever comes out with a special edition of this with a higher quality paper, I would gladly purchase it for my collection.
