Sie machte es sich zur Lebensaufgabe, unermüdlich für die Anerkennung der Avantgarde, insbesondere des Expressionismus, zu kämpfen. Mit Karl Schmidt-Rottluff und Erich Heckel verband sie eine enge Freundschaft, aber auch Franz Radziwill und die Hamburger Sezessionisten profitierten von ihrem großen Engagement. Schapire vermittelte Ausstellungen in namhaften Galerien, publizierte stetig Artikel und förderte Ankäufe expressionistischer Werke durch große Museen, indem sie den Frauenbund zur Förderung deutscher bildender Kunst gründete.Der Band mit rund 130 Gemälden, Grafiken, Künstlerpostkarten und -zeitschriften, Fotografien, Schmuck und persönlicher Korrespondenz würdigt das Lebenswerk Rosa Schapires. Renommierte Kunstwissenschaftler beschreiben Engagement, Sammlung und Rezeption der großen Förderin und Apologetin moderner deutscher Kunst und begleiten die Kunsthistorikerin jüdischer Herkunft von ihrer ostgalizischen Heimat bis ins Londoner Exil.
